Afia Oromo

Bearer of Two Souls, Osiris' Chosen Vessel

Overview

Afia, a Kalashtar born in the sacred lands of Ile Ife, carries a destiny shaped by both divine intervention and tragedy. The younger twin of a fateful birth, Afia is not wholly mortal; her being was forever altered when Osiris, Keeper of Balance and the Afterlife, intervened. This act bound her sibling’s soul to her own, turning her into a Spirit Master—a conduit between the living and the dead. Her journey is one of quiet purpose, walking the line between realms while wielding Osiris’ blessing to protect balance and guide souls to their rightful rest.

Origins: The Divine Intervention of Osiris

Afia’s story begins in Ile Ife, at the sacred altar of Osiris, where her mother—a revered High Priestess—cried out for salvation during a perilous childbirth. The firstborn twin emerged weak and silent, but Afia, born second, was strong and healthy, her life hanging by a thread. In her desperation, Afia’s mother pleaded for the gods' mercy.

Osiris answered. To him, the twin souls represented an imbalance—one soul thriving while the other teetered on oblivion. Instead of claiming the elder twins' fading spark, Osiris took the departing soul of her elder twin and bound it to Afia, intertwining their fates. In doing so, he restored balance and marked Afia as something other—a mortal vessel of divine purpose, chosen to stand as a bridge between life and death. No one knows Afia is now a kalashtar and now a human due to Osiris' intervention.

The Will of Osiris

Osiris did not act without reason. His intervention ensured that Afia would become a champion of balance:

  • Restoring Order: The cycles of life and death are sacred, but unrest stirs in Kemet. Fey incursions, disturbances in the underworld, and mortal corruption threaten Osiris’ realm. Afia is destined to stand against these forces.
  • Mortal Connection: The bound soul grants Afia a link to the spiritual plane, enabling her to commune with spirits and wield magic that honours the departed. She is both guide and guardian to restless souls.

The Spirit Master

Afia’s gifts align her with the ancient path of the Spirit Master, a rare and revered wizardly tradition. Unlike necromancers who tamper with life’s sacred balance, Spirit Masters commune with spirits to harness ethereal power and protect the living. Through her magic, Afia becomes a beacon of peace for the dead and a bulwark against forces that seek to twist death into darkness.

Her Powers
  • Spirit Guardians: Afia can summon spectral echoes of souls long passed, their incorporeal forms shielding allies and warding off harm.
  • Ethereal Sight: Her bound twin grants her glimpses into the realm of spirits, revealing hidden paths and spectral presences invisible to others.
  • Calming the Dead: Afia’s presence brings peace to restless spirits, guiding them to their eternal rest.
  • Spirit Magic: Her spells reflect her role as Osiris’ agent, drawing upon spiritual energy to protect, guide, and empower.

Memories of the Lost Twin

The soul of Afia’s twin does not rest quietly within her. She often experiences fleeting sleeping visions of the Field of Reeds—the paradise her sibling glimpsed but was denied. In moments of peril, this sibling’s presence manifests, granting her:

  • Strength: The twin soul bolsters Afia’s power during desperate battles.
  • Guidance: Whispers of insight or glimpses of the underworld help Afia navigate challenges tied to the spiritual plane.
  • Burden: The weight of carrying two souls is not without cost. Afia occasionally wrestles with flashes of her twin’s personality or lingering sadness, leaving her isolated from others.

Aisha

Her panther companion, Aisha, mirrors Afia’s quiet strength. The bond between them is unshakable, with Aisha often watching for unseen threats or lingering spirits. Some whisper that Aisha herself carries the soul of a noble guardian sent by Osiris.

Family Tree

Life in Akhet-Khepri

Afia finds herself in Akhet-Khepri for the Festival of the Passing Shadow, a sacred celebration where life and death are honoured. Her reasons for attending are deeply personal:

She seeks to commune with spirits and uncover the meaning of her connection to Osiris.

Her curiosity about the balance of life and death drives her to observe the festival’s rituals.

Osiris may have guided her here, sensing an imbalance that requires her intervention.

While Afia desires solitude and space to commune with her spirit friends, the festival's chaos and her growing bond with her companions force her into the centre of events that may reshape Kemet.

The Role of Afia

Afia serves as both protector and guide—a wizard who channels the wisdom of spirits rather than arcane tomes alone. Her magic is both defensive and restorative, reflecting her mission to honour the dead and shield the living.

Among her companions, she may appear quiet and aloof, her gaze fixed on the unseen. Yet her connection to the spirits grants her unmatched insight into threats both mortal and otherworldly.

Afia’s journey is one of purpose, discovery, and balance. Guided by Osiris, she walks the thin line between life and death, carrying her sibling’s soul and the weight of her divine calling.

In Akhet-Khepri, the city of splendour and shadows, the Spirit Master will decide whether the balance endures or crumbles...
