Character Creation:

Building a character for the world of alune may seem daunting so we are going to break it down a little to give you a base for both backstory creation and class picking.   Notes on character backstory: Dming i see a lot of tropes be played that aren't really fun for the table so try to avoid the below stereotype or talk to your dm to determine how to play this. That being said done in moderation all the below can be great at the table, but are easy to be both annoying or overdone.

Edge Lords:

This is your batman done wrong type. the Everyone i knew was killed by the murder cult and now im here for revenged. I dont work with the party and no one can understand the darkness in my heart. Sure batman is a great character, but this game is about working with your party members, and being the standoffish broodish type doesn't mesh well.   While tragedy is a great motive for your character, just make sure there is more personality to your character than living for revenge

Chaotic Evil Characters/ Lawful Good character:

An evil character is a beautiful thing done right, but for most players its just being a murder hobo which is banned at my table.   Chaotic evil sadly is normally played as "L.O.L isn't it funny when i burn the old people home down with orphans? Wait... why am im being hunted down by high level paladins. and the party is turning me in cause they are tired of my shit?! This is unfair!"   Lawful good is just "hey you can't have fun sneaking around and steal the gem from the evil baron cause thats illegal, and hey you can't do anything remotely fun cause thats illegal. Wait why does the party hate me, im just doing whats right!"     Done right booth are really great! A just lawful good paladin who might look the other way when his party has to do something unmoral to get information they need but says a voice of reason when people want to start burning down old people homes. Don't forget a little chaotic enthused goblin that really just has adhd, impulse control issues, and no social awareness. Sure it feels shame when it does something stupid or silly but it can't help itself and yet is very endearing to the party.   Done wrong i've seen both end campaigns.   If this is your first time play or even your second i would avoid either of these types but if you feel strongly discuss with your dm what would be approate to play

Excessive Kleptomaniac:

Listen being a rouge is cool, you sneak around, stab things good, check for traps, and lock pick doors. You are also really good at pickpocketing or stealing which causes a lot of players to want to take everything not nailed down.   While this is amusing it will cause a lot of split the party moments as well as focus on just the thief which pulls from the rest of the players. Remember, there is always a time and a place to steal and your character will most likely be hunted down if they steal the wrong thing.

The racist:

This is a world with hundred of different races, and it makes sense for your character to have some hatred for some for some unjustness you faced or how you where raised . Given the age it is set in, tolerance isn't widely pushed nor is education up to the standards to push against stereotypes. Heck if your a kobold and goblin and hate all humans/tieflings for them raiding your dens/nest its even understandable, but that is a valid character reason. Im talking about prejudice.   If your character hates every other race, one your prolly a sun elf or dwarf, and two its overdooooone. I almost always have one person in every one of my campigns that hates every other race but his own, for no reason other than "its funny." And for new players it most likely is. For the dm, we most likely have heard every thing your going to say and then some.   Your going to meet NPC that are absolutely prejudice against any race you play, but for your character if you want to be have a hatred for another race make sure its both justified and something that doesn't solely define your character.   Example of it done right: I had a human warlock player that hated every race, even his own i would say. Would often recieve flack for this this in game from npcs but keep to it. But throughout the year or so we played his character was slowly changing. He became "Friends" with a social inept goliath and was mellowing out slllowly. It was the sight of character development that makes the troupe more than just tolerable but grand to see, but it was mostly the dynamic between the hate filled warlock and the overly friendly goliath that gave it more life that was enjoyable to watch.

First Things First:

You need to decided on how you are going to build your character, the two important factors to character creation is class and backstory.   Pick Race and Class first: Do not worry about min maxing or making an all powerful character build as you will be giving lots of things not included in the class building section that will make whatever build you do viable. Think of your class is like your occupation while it is important to your character it is not the defining factor of them while the race can determine alot about your character.   Look at the two links below and pick your class and race.   Class   Races:     You will then use one of the following for stat distribution:   Starter Build(recommended):
18 16 14 12 10 8   Split Skilled:
18 18 12 10 8 8   Specialist:
18 14 10 8 8 8 You gain 3 feats but you can not use them to increase any of your level 8 stats.   Not a specialist :
14 14 14 14 14 14 You also get to add one feat that doesn't add stat increase.   Point buy: 44 Points
If you want to do the point buy you must play through at least one of my prologs so you understand how this differs from normal dnd.

Focus on Backstory over build:

For my games your charters backstory is very very important. Further down we will go through a fun character builder to help give you an idea but consider the following things while designing your character.

Character Motivation:

What drives your character is very important, its the whole reason your character is out doing adventures instead of staying home. Perhaps they are like most of us and just trying to find their place in the world. Or trying to prove themselves to family, friends, some noble, god, or organization? It could be simple as wanting to prove themselves as a grand warrior, seeking a lost artifact only heard about in tales and legends, whatever it is a strong goal and motive will help you roleplay your character better.   A characters motive is often a defining moment in their life that pivoted them on the path of adventure they are about to take. This could be a death of a loved one, A discovered hidden talent, Found out a secret they weren't suppose to see, found themselves at the whim of royalty, heard a story of gold or glory and decided they wanted that, or as simple as being chased out of their home by bandits.

Think of the world and your characters place in it:

Read through some of the articles about the different regions of Alune and their people. As well as the prolog setting proved by the dm. This will help you not feel like a fish out of water and more apart of the living world of Alune. You can check the links below to get a better idea from the places you can be from and the people that live there.

Include Flaws and Weaknesses:

You should avoid creating a Mary Sue character, you will start off in the game as a no one, even if you are a noble or chosen by a diety or patron you would be little more than a pawn. Its okay for your character to think themselves as important or powerful but they are not.   No character should be perfect, so flaws and weakness will make them not only more relatable and interesting but more fun to play. A paranoia bard always thinking his charming ways will come back to haunt him, a cowardly knight who despite shaking in his armor will try his best to defend his friends or talk them out of fighting, a mage addicted to magic that she never thinks to do anything without using it and is obsessed gaining more.

You are Just a Single Character in a Living World:

Its very important to realize that you are just one character in a world that has be worked on for several years, the story will be becoming someone important to the world or being consumed by it. So its very important to know you should not write your character as someone all powerful either physically, magically, or politically. While tempting to make your character a super hero, this is not a power fantasy but a story about the struggles of your characters how how they will triumph or succumb to them.   Keep in mind when you give your backstory to the DM he will change things to fit the world, he will also provide you with additional infromation about the world that only your character might know.
