Lore

Techno-barbarians is the name given to the warriors who battled over the ruins of Terra during the Age of Strife. They formed the troops of the warlords who dominated Terra during the period, and were equipped with a primitive form of powered armor which would become the basis for the developments of Space Marine armor.   The Emperor arose in the later part of the Age of Strife to reunify Terra. Under his leadership his army conquered the other warring techno-barbarian factions.   wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Techno-barbarian       The Unification Wars, also known as the Wars of Unification, the Unity Wars, The Unification or just Unity, were a series of conflicts fought on Terra beginning in the 29th Millennium at the end of the Age of Strife and lasting until 712.M30.   It was during these campaigns that the Emperor of Mankind first publicly revealed Himself to a desperate Humanity and began His conquest of Terra to unify the techno-barbarian states and tribes that dominated the sacred homeworld of Mankind and forge the foundation of the Imperium of Man.   warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Unification_Wars

Summary

Techno-barbarian is a term used to describe the varies factions fighting against one another and against the emerging Imperium during the Unification Wars and broadly the Age of Strife.   The term, however, is largely biased and propagandized as although many of these groups were very brutal and savage, they were far from unorganized and backwards. Additionally, the Imperium would use similar tactics and behaviors during and even after this era. Based on this we can assert that most groups not directly aligned to the imperium were considered to be “barbaric” and fall under this nomenclature.

The core concept of a Techno-barbarian

The Name “techno-barbarian” is meant to instill in the reader an image of a savage and rugged individual that uses equipment that exceeds their own capacity of understanding. For example, a dirt converted muscle-bound man with a cybernetic arm and eye using a laser rifle. This ideal is for the most part a reality. Although the idea that the said individual is fully uncapable of understanding his own equipment is more complicated.   More times then not the people of this time did have a reasonable understanding on how to uses and maintain there equipment and gear. They did not however understand deep understandings on how to duplicate or fully fix key issues due to lose of knowledge through the ages. A modern 21st century example is how most people understand how modern gadget and devices work but would not be able to successfully duplicate them or even fix them when they are severely broken.   Some organizations and states do have factories and or the understanding to produces what would be considered “archotech”. But they do not have much understanding about core features and machines work. Thus often relaying on ritual practices to produce such items.   As a unwritten rule of thumb, if humanity was able to understand and produce items and machines in the mid 20th century, techno barbarians of this time can so as well.

Types

Techno barbarians' organizations come in a forms. Below are several common types of techno-barbarian factions.
  • DaoT Legacy States: few States, wither they be leftovers from the old world government, or simply functional municipal governments, have managed to survive the last great war with Mars. With the planetary government gone, these states have largely given up on coexisting with their neighbors. Having declared themselves the successors to the old order, they guard themselves with bitter spite and resentment for the day when they can regain the glory that they once had. Behind their Vaults, Hive Walls, Bunker Metropolis and or Automated Defense Perimeter, they guard technological marvels that are truly unique, many whose knowledge was long lost. Controlling fractured STC, they maintain and guard these piece of archotech from outsiders with reverence. These places remember their histories, even now that it has become tangled in myth and legend. These are people heavily dogmatic and zealus in there believes of their perceived supremacy. Because of this they despise outsiders of all types. Ancient traditions and bureaucratic nightmares haunt these organisation. With honor bound rituals, several layers of paperwork, these states are old and complex, and only those who could navigate across the barbwire of statecraft and the intrigue of the palaces managed to secure their position on top.

  • Age of Strife States: Born after the Earth-Mars War, they formed in a world engulfed in flames and terror. They are as fluid as they are numerous, in truth, there are no true defining for a Civilized States other than the Blessings of the Legacy States, many form at the shadows of the great civilizations, or managed to exist within a particularly ruin dense region and harvest the ancient storehouses of technologies to overcome their more brutalist kin. Vassal states, War Dogs, backyard of the Legacy Lords, Freedom Fighters, ideological states, they are all and more, for in the ashen wastes, they are the ones that managed to prosper. Here, law exist, with many crimes are punishable by death. Though they may call themselves as such; here, there are no kings, queens, saints or nobility. For in these dark times, kindness and compassion will often lead to death or worse. Slavery is common if not the norm in such places. Abhumans are often looked down upon and shunned by these societies. However, in some instances these bigotries are overlooked for the possible benefits of these stable mutants.

  • Raider states - The bane of the hives settlements. Raider States are a catch all term for those men, woman and groups that embraced their animalistic and savage sides. Choosing to form gangs, clans or hordes to rove throught the dangerous wastes to survive. They care little for diplomacy and statehood, choosing instead to scavenge, stealing and fighting for their needs. Their grasp of technology and science has deteriorated to become spiritual and ritualistic. Despite this, many techno-barbarian groups will make use of cybernetic enhancements, complex weapons and even genetic modifications to survive in harsh environments of the waste. Techno-Barbarians can be made up of all sorts, from the most horrendous abhuman mutant, to malefic psykers and bloodthirsty mercenaries. Warfare is a way of life for them and the Dawinian Law rules their land. If you are strong enough, you can have anything you want. Just remember that anything that you take can also be taken from you.

  • Anarchic groups - For even those who fell far from humanity, exist the Mutant Zones, where Abhumans and unstable mutants abound. Mutants are unpredictable, their body plans are impossible to accurately track, and their danger, even if unintentional, cannot be predictable. What they are capable of is anybody´s guess. They can be as strong as mountains or as smarts as gods, while also being as deformed as monsters of the abyss and as short lived as the sandstorms of the land. They are an ever-changing threat. Impossible to predict, and thus impossible to tolerate. Long ago they were expelled to the salt deserts of the ancient Ocean Floor, ancient caves and irradiated lands away from the regular human population.
