Metal houses of Zetalph

For some, the Age of War wasn't that long ago. In many places, there are still remnants of architecture, equipment, and commonplace items related to the constant war. One of the best examples would be metal houses seen everywhere in Zetalph, easy to build structures prepared in case of bombardments, magical or otherwise.   Since various metals are extracted around Zetalph and there seems to be an overabundance of them, they were chosen as the main material in the construction of houses here. This resulted in the creation of buildings that are very bad at regulating the temperature - they get really hot in warm days and one can freeze off their fingers if they touch them during cold days.   From the outside, those buildings are just simple metal boxes, some of them even have windows cut out. Their original color has long ago been covered by the black soot coming from the chimneys of Pigment factories and metalworks located all around the city. People gave up a long time ago trying to clean them or decorate them. Black boxes just became a part of the aesthetic of the city.

Inside of the house

Most of the houses here consist of one or two rooms, separated by thin walls. One of those rooms always doubles up as a kitchen, with a Ration supplier installed into one of the walls.
Often, people would sleep in the sleeping bags on the floor, either in one of the rooms or in the basement. Those of higher status create bathrooms and toilettes inside of their abodes, while those poorer than them need to rely on outhouses and tubs.   Since the Age of War came to an end long ago and there is peace, people decorate their houses more and more, not fearing that they will lose any fragile items.

As once in the past, the bombardments were a more daily occurrence, to increase their chances of survival, people dug basements under their houses that also served as bomb shelters.
Since then, a lot of those basements have been refurbished to serve as normal rooms and the size of said rooms is said to be the symbol of status for the inhabitants of Zetalph.

Metal houses do not sound fun to live in! I think you did a good job here, thinking about the history of your world and how it has affected the current conditions of your world.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .
