Thanged's deadliest birb
The Helmed Hawk on a Hunt by Mardrena
Also nicknamed the "Cresta of the Skies" because of its distinctive bony crown, the Helmed Hawk has spelt doom for many unawares beasts across all major biomes of Thanged save for the Northern Ring and beyond. Wheras terrestrial raptors deploy their vice-like talons to snatch up hapless smaller prey, the gherfen is capable of executing high-speed dives, turning itself into a living spear that will often impale larger animals such as kirya cattle. There is crude artwork featured in the Northern Ring's cave complexes of many species of birds, with the gherfen featured as chiefest among them. In the present day very few remain dominant: the gherfen of course, the vitreelas-a lumbering flight-less scavenger, the chamia-a domesticated fowl prized for its meat and eggs by city-dwelling Thangiens, a handful of egrets and heron species that frequent the Winding White and Southern Salt, and a small variety of diminutive songbirds. If ever there were ducks that frequented Thanged's waterways, it would seem they were hunted to extinction long before city-dwellers and Lonesteaders came to deploy the airsheild technology that protects livestock today. If ever a duck were to return to Thanged, it would have to be introduced from the Oldworld and placed under strict security.
