Prowler Profession in After the Fog | World Anvil

Prowler

Trailblazers of the unknown

Before we begin, let me stress it: not anybody can be a prowler! They do the most dangerous work out there and their trainees have the highest mortality rate of us all, despite being stronger and better prepared than all of you. Just forget it.

Beyond the walls

Prowlers are lonely individuals who venture outside the relative safety of Detroit to explore the Wastes. Their goal is to gather informations about the world we're living in, create connections with communities outside and, most importantly, collect precious resources that cannot be crafted here, like circuit boards and electronic parts. Despite the world being such a dangerous place, they usually go alone, with more trust in their own skills than anyone else's.

Though the Fog travels beyond the walls, they tend to avoid it actively. However, they often run into creatures or marauders. This means that they rely more on their physical abilities and weapons than their gift. What's more, the majority of them possesses utility gifts that helps them find their way in the mist or run away faster. Not many gifted fighters in their ranks.

Depending on their experience, they go on long journeys, sometimes of several months, to the other side of the country or stick to the well-known surroundings of Detroit. In this regard, we can separate them in two groups:

Regulars

Regular prowlers have multiple duties: they patrol a large perimeter of about 100km around Detroit to either neutralize or signal any threat that would go near the city; maintain good or trade relations with the various groups of homewrecked; and group up to eliminate targets deemed too dangerous.

Contrary to a popular belief, they don't stick to the close surroundings of Detroit. Though their missions are rarely longer than a month, they can go quite far, especially on the rare occasion where they take one of the few car they have at their disposal. They still take less risks than the other kind of prowlers, and so the wounded but still able usually end their carreer as regulars on patrol duty.

Explorers

Wildcards and free spirits, explorers are the one to put sparkles in the eyes of the little ones. Understandably, since they live a life of pure freedom, going as far as they want unshackled. They are the ones who make the greatest discoveries, brave the worst dangers and come back with enough stories for a lifetime. Of course, they are also those who die the most. No matter how geared up and apt they are, the fog is merciless and the list of missing explorers only grows longer.

Still, we need them and their recklessness. In combat, they are beasts that few in Detroit could beat. they know everything about survival alone in the wilderness, and are never lost. It is a shame old age always claim them, as they suffer the most from the enclosed shelters. Explorers have the shortest lifespan overall, because what make them so great at prowling is also a curse that prevents them from living down there.
