Creatures Species in After the Fog | World Anvil

Creatures

The Mist is deadly and unforgiving, even for its own creations. While What lurks in the Mist are threats beyond common measure, it seems that the weakest of them are rejected and thrown out of the pack. And as always, it's up to us to put our lives on the line to fix the mistakes of nature.

Demotion

What lurks in the Mist always travels with it. But it seems that staying so long in the Mist takes a toll on the monsters too, or perhaps they can't adapt to a variation in the fog's density. Either way, at some point in the trail of a fog creatures will emerge. Unlike the semi-ethereal things of the Mist, creatures are very physical and real.

They might be the weakest, but they are no pushovers. In fact, creatures are able to grow and evolve, contrary to their misty counterparts. The longer a creature has been outside, the bigger it grew, and the more dangerous it is. They come in all shapes, from the loose zombie to the modern dinosaur. Luckily, despite being present in large quantities inside the Mist, no winged creature has been sighted outside. I really hope there is a kind of hidden rule that prevents them from leaving, or perhaps they never fall behind. Because I swear we are not ready enough for a flying monster when we can't use our Gift.

Don't go into tall grass

When we fought to liberate Detroit, creatures teemed in the streets of our city, though the distinction between them and what lurks in the Mist was not yet clear. Their ridiculous number could be related to the topology of a city which makes it easy for mist monsters to lose their way and fall behind, transforming the cities of old into deadly traps.

Nowadays, the city is mostly safe, as our immediate surroundings were thoroughly cleared. While we only have to deal with the weaklings that are left after a passing fog and quickly disposed of, others encounter many dangers on their journeys. Prowlers venture the far lands, where no human has set foot in decades. The creatures they face have been left alone for all this time and have grown bigger and bigger, feeding on wild animals and weaker creatures. Each of them would be tough to fend off even for a group of armed veterans, and they have to survive on their own.

Preventive strike

When a creature becomes a threat to Detroit, an expedition is put together to eliminate it. They consist of mostly prowlers, but members of the Sentinels and other guilds occasionally join the party. This is only done as a last resort, when the creature draws too close to the city, because it is never an easy fight, and many lose their lives. Thus, when encountered in the wild, they are left alone when possible, and eliminated only if they are young and feeble creatures.

Off limits

Detroit was no exception. Without talking about Seattle, all ancient cities are filled to the brim with dangerous creatures and monsters that have dug their lair in the ruined foundations of steel. For that reason and despite the amount of valuable resources they surely hide, no one is crazy enough to venture into the ruins. It took thousands of us twenty years to retake Detroit as an army, that is a feat that no lone prowler is capable of.

Great details throughout! My favorite was probably the bit where the narrator is worrying about flying things coming out of the mist. That moment really told me a lot about our world and the people in it via a description of what they fear. Nicely done!

Now it's time for the awkward wave.
