"I find myself often dwelling upon a vexing question: how much do we truly grasp of the laws that govern nature and magic, the forces that shape our existence? An educated mind might dismiss such a question as frivolous, for among my peers it is fashionable to feign certainty. My esteemed colleagues—learned men and women all—cling tightly to the wisdom inherited from those who came before, from minds sharper and more daring, who devoted lifetimes to unraveling the intricate tapestry of the natural world. Yet, I cannot help but observe how woefully incomplete that tapestry remains. Indeed, the gaps in our understanding yawn wider than the threads we have managed to weave, and even those threads are prone to fraying, demanding constant reexamination and revision. Do not mistake me, dear reader—I hold no grudge against those who place their faith in the collective knowledge of our kind. It is, after all, the nearest we may ever come to truth. I, too, am guilty of such reliance. And yet, I am haunted by the humbling thought that the wisdom I commit to these pages is but a flickering lantern against the boundless darkness of our ignorance. It is for this reason that I devote the fourth volume of my Compendium to the Laws of Magic and Matter. Herein, I endeavor to preserve that faint light our collective endeavors have kindled, flawed though it may be."
