Whipple Shields

After the beginnings of manned spaceflight in the late 20th century, space organizations quickly recognized the dangers of flying debris and meteoroids. These small but very fast celestial bodies pose great dangers for spacecrafts and their crews, as even a pea-sized object can cause serious damage to the hull. The reaction of the early space organizations was the Whipple Shield. A multi-layered hull design meant to intercept and disperse such objects before they reach the inner hull and pressure body.

Utility

The Whiple Shield is a type of multilayer envelope structure in which the outer layers are designed to break down impacting meteoroids and space debris, depriving them of their energy and allowing them to be held back by the inner layers before they can penetrate the pressure body and cause more dangerous damage.
