Feast of White Tail Tradition / Ritual in Aewyn | World Anvil

Feast of White Tail

A comet orbiting Aewyn visits every year and have done so for as longs as Aewynians remember, and for some, it represents new beginnings and a new year. White Tail is visible on the sky every spring and is visible for the entirety of spring. On the first day of it being visible, the people of Seiwania celebrates the new year with the first harvest of the season.   White Tails orbit around the sun Êdgar is very similar to Aewyns, but it has an orbit that is perpendicular to that of Aewyns. It matches up every year that the comets come close to Êdgar around springtime, a rare and wonderful coincidence.

Celebrating a new start

For most Aewynians, food, festivities and being together with those you love, is the most important things in life.   So when celebrating the new year, they celebrate with a large feast consisting of the first harvest - an old tradition going back centuries.   There isn't any specific food or dishes that have to get served at this celebration, and it varies from city to city. Whatever crop they grow is what they get!   Around many coastal cities, fish and seashells are a big part of their dishes, cooked in varies delicious ways.

Day of the feast

As mentioned, the day of celebrations and feasts is the first day the comet is visible in the sky. The date isn't the same each year and actually varies with around a week or two back and forth. But the comet itself isn't visible at all times during the day because of the planet spinning on its own axis.   That means that some years the comets is spotted at nightfall, and that means the festivities must wait till the next evening before the celebrations begin.   When evening arrives the smell of delicious foods fills the air, the smell is so thick you can almost taste it.

Competitions

Friendly competitions amongst citizens happen every year - for some, they are more serious than others, but that is entirely up to them. You don't win anything other than the bragging rights for the entire next year to come until another one wins:
  • Size comparisons: Showing off your biggest specimen of a particular crop, and whoever has the largest "wins"
  • Taste competitions: This is a highly subjective one and can cause anger and resentment between the competing parts.
  • Eating competitions: Eating something on time! This is always a favourite both for the participants and the spectators.
After the celebrations the only ones that actually remembers the results of those competitions is the winners - the rest happily forgets. And it's considered rather annoying to still brag about a win when the summer has begun.
Alright Pheolin, stop with the bragging already! We don't give a flying goose if your cucumber was the biggest! Keep it to yourself will ya?
