Varakh-Vel is the westernmost hold of the Khazadum and the second oldest, founded approximately fifty years after Thalgrimm when the first generation of dwarven engineers had established the initial hold and turned their attention to the mountain's western extent. It commands the western approaches of Kharak-Duun -- the passes toward the orc territories, the Silva Borealis to the north, and the Roman agricultural frontier to the south -- and has been the primary point of Roman-dwarven commercial contact for nine centuries. Its gateway faces south onto the Provincia Montium Ferri foothills, its trade post is the most commercially active in the range, and its Thane, Gorund Vel-Ash, is by Roman consensus the most practically sophisticated dwarven official in regular contact with the empire. Varro knows Varakh exclusively from outside its gates. He considers this one of the more significant gaps in his scholarly record.

Defences

Varakh's gateway is the most combat-tested of the five surface entrances. Gorund Vel-Ash fought personally in two orc incursion events that reached the gateway approach -- unusual for a Thane, whose caste is not typically expected to engage directly, and the source of the battle-scarring that Roman diplomatic visitors note and that Gorund wears without commentary. The defensive positions above and flanking the gateway are maintained to an operational standard that the other holds, which have not faced direct approach by hostile forces in living memory, have not had occasion to match. Gorund Vel-Ash has been known to inspect the ballista emplacements personally on a quarterly basis. He describes this as administrative thoroughness.

The kill-corridors between the gateway and the ramp are, by the account of Thane Bera who has seen both, more extensively developed at Varakh than at Thalgrimm. Gorund has had reasons to think about what happens if something gets through the gate. He has developed responses accordingly.

Industry & Trade

Varakh is by Roman assessment the most commercially oriented of the seven holds, a characterisation Gorund Vel-Ash has neither confirmed nor denied and which Thane Bera, when asked, described as 'accurate in the way that calling a man a good swimmer accurately describes a man who has also designed the harbour.' The surface trade post at Varakh's gateway handles the highest volume of standard commercial exchange -- iron goods, precision instruments, raw ore and processed metal, weapons of the quality the Roman military cannot produce domestically -- under the third-century protocols that both parties continue to find preferable to renegotiation.

What the commercial characterisation misses is Varakh's second economic function: intelligence. The hold sits at the intersection of Roman, orc, and giant interest. Gorund Vel-Ash has spent a hundred and fifty-six years developing a picture of the western political landscape that no Roman military intelligence network possesses and no orc clan confederation has assembled. The trade post is where Roman goods enter the dwarven economy. It is also where Gorund's picture of the western situation is updated, daily, by the commercial traffic passing through it.

Gorund has established quiet contact with the goblin king Skrix Vreth through intermediaries over the past year, independent of the formal Roman-goblin negotiating track. Skrix has offered Gorund something specific in exchange for dwarven neutrality when the goblin situation breaks open -- what exactly has been offered is not yet in Thane Bera's knowledge, which means it is not in Varro's knowledge, which means it is not in this document. Gorund has not refused. He has also not yet accepted. He is calculating. Two orc Grak'thun have separately approached him asking what Rome is doing in the deep roads. He does not know who is prompting those questions. He is increasingly concerned that whoever is, they have a picture of the western situation that Gorund does not have, which is an unusual position for Gorund to be in.

Infrastructure

Varakh's surface trade post is the largest and best-equipped of the three Roman-facing posts: permanent stone structures on the Roman side, maintained by a combination of Provincia Montium Ferri provincial administration and dwarven commercial staff, with warehousing, currency exchange operating under protocols accepted by both the Roman Annona and the Seven Holds treasury, and a permanent translation staff who work the schedule established in the third century without finding it arbitrary. The post factors describe the exchange system as the most reliable commercial arrangement they have worked with, which Varro notes is high praise from people who have also worked with Roman tax collection.

The hold's ventilation system has a notable characteristic: the exhaust apertures on the northern cliff face, which discharge toward the taiga, are larger than the southern-facing intakes. Gorund Vel-Ash, when a visiting Academy engineer observed this asymmetry and asked about it, said the mountain's thermal geometry required the difference. The Academy engineer accepted this answer. Varro, when told about it later, did not.

The northern exhaust apertures are oversized because they serve a dual function: ventilation exhaust and passive air-sampling for the cave surveillance network that runs northwest into the Silva Borealis root geology. A change in the air moving through the northern cave system -- temperature, particulate composition, the smell of fire or Jugum or giant activity -- registers in the ventilation sensors before it registers in any surface observation post. Gorund has been monitoring this system personally for forty years. It has given him advance notice of giant movement twice and orc incursion activity once. The Roman frontier garrison of Provincia Montium Ferri is unaware the system exists.

Districts

Varakh follows the standard hold structure -- Thane's tier at the summit, descending through noble, common, farming, and forge levels -- but the hold's western character expresses itself in each level's specific development. The commercial orientation is visible from the common levels upward; the military preparedness is present throughout. The hold is eleven centuries old and feels it: well-used, well-maintained, shaped by the particular pressures of being the Iron Spine's western face.

THE THANE'S TIER

Gorund Vel-Ash governs from the highest level of Varakh's atrium, in chambers that are, by the account of the one Roman diplomatic visitor who has been received there, functional rather than ceremonial. The throne room contains a working map of the western approaches -- not a decorative piece but a current operational document, updated by the archivist staff on a schedule that the diplomatic visitor, who was not a military analyst, described as 'remarkably frequent.' The Vel-Ash genealogical archive occupies the chambers adjacent to the working rooms; it is the second oldest continuous family record in the known world after the Ironmantle archive at Thalgrimm.

THE NOBLE LEVELS

The senior Vel-Ash household and the noble bloodlines of Varakh occupy the upper terraces in the pattern common to all holds, but the noble levels at Varakh have a practical quality that distinguishes them from the more ceremonially developed equivalent at Thalgrimm. The gem-garden formations in Varakh's atrium are extensive but utilitarian in their cultivation -- the Vel-Ash aesthetic runs to functional precision rather than decorative elaboration, a preference that the craftwork guilds have absorbed over eleven centuries and that gives Varakh's manufactured goods a characteristic quality that Roman buyers describe as 'the kind of thing that does its job so exactly that you stop noticing it is there.'

THE COMMON LEVELS

The commercial character of Varakh expresses itself most clearly in the common levels, where the craftwork halls and workshops are oriented toward external production in a way that no other hold matches. The instruments calibrated for Roman hands, the weapons produced to Roman military specifications, the architectural components designed for Roman-scale construction -- all are made in workshops that have been taking Roman orders, through the trade post, for nine centuries. The common levels have the quality of a place that knows exactly what it is making and for whom, which is a different quality from the self-directed manufacture of Thalgrimm's craftwork halls.

The communal spaces of the common levels are also the most visited by Varakh's orc diplomatic contacts, on the rare occasions when Gorund's personal arrangement brings an orc representative inside the hold rather than confining the contact to the back room at the trade post. The common levels' population has, over several generations, developed a working familiarity with orc presence that the other holds -- which have not had orc contacts at the common level -- have not acquired.

THE FARMING LEVELS

The farming levels at Varakh are standard in organisation -- level minus-five, fungus banks, Jugum pens, the agricultural system that makes the hold self-sufficient without surface access -- but more extensively developed than at the younger holds, eleven centuries of agricultural refinement having produced a system that Thane Bera describes, with the particular quality she uses when she is being deliberately understated, as 'efficient.' The Jugum population at Varakh is the second largest in the network after Thalgrimm. The Jugum at Varakh are, by account, calmer than at other holds -- a product, the farming caste explains, of consistent handling protocols across eleven centuries of breeding.

THE FORGE DEPTHS

Varakh's forge levels produce the manufactured goods that leave through the trade post, and they are calibrated for that purpose: the output is precision-finished goods rather than raw-forge volume, the metal refined to standards that Roman metallurgists describe as exceeding anything they can replicate. The gas lighting in Varakh's forge corridors runs at the same orange-tinted elevated pressure as at other holds' deep workshops, but the forges here are smaller and more specialised than the mass-production facilities at Durak-Mazad. The sound from the forge depths is present at the common levels as a working hum rather than a dominant note -- Varakh is a manufacturing hold, but its manufacturing is oriented toward quality rather than quantity.

The lowest documented forge level connects to a natural ore body that the Khazadum have been working since the hold's founding and that Roman geological surveys have not located from the surface. The ore body extends northwest, into the root geology of the western range, and the dwarven mining corridors that follow it extend further than any publicly disclosed survey covers. Where the mining corridors end and the cave surveillance network begins is a distinction that the Varakh archivist records maintain precisely and that Gorund considers one of the most important pieces of information in the hold.

Guilds and Factions

The Vel-Ash bloodline's governance of Varakh is absolute at the hold level and has been since founding -- eleven centuries without a succession crisis, a record that the other holds acknowledge and that Gorund considers the most important administrative fact about Varakh that Roman diplomats consistently fail to appreciate. The craftwork guilds are as old as at Thalgrimm but have developed a different character: where Thalgrimm's guilds are oriented toward governance-adjacent precision manufacture, Varakh's are shaped by eleven centuries of proximity to the Roman commercial market. The instruments they make are calibrated for Roman hands. The weapons are produced to specifications that the Roman military has been requesting, with incremental modifications, since the third century. The guilds know the Roman market better than the Roman market knows itself.

The intelligence function -- Gorund's systematic picture of the western political situation -- is not a guild or a formal organisation. It is a personal operation, run by the Thane through his commercial contacts, his archivist staff, and the cave surveillance network. It has no name. It has no charter. It produces, quarterly, a document that goes to the Thanus Magnus at Thalgrimm and nowhere else.

History

Varakh was established approximately fifty years after Thalgrimm, when the first generation of dwarven engineers had consolidated the initial hold and the Vel-Ash bloodline led the western expansion into the Iron Spine's western range. The hold's position made it the natural point of first Roman contact when the empire's northern expansion reached the Iron Spine foothills approximately four hundred years after the Permutatio. The third-century trade protocols were negotiated at what is now the surface trade post, in the first Roman-dwarven diplomatic exchange in which both parties were sufficiently confident of the other's intentions to sit at the same table without weapons drawn. The protocols have not been significantly revised since. Both parties have found this preferable.

The two orc incursion events that reached Varakh's gateway -- in 743 A.P. and 891 A.P. -- are the most significant military events in the hold's history and the events that shaped Gorund Vel-Ash's understanding of the western political situation. The 743 incursion was a war-band action of the kind that Roman frontier commanders characterise as raiding. The 891 incursion was something else: a coordinated approach by three clans simultaneously, a level of orc tactical coordination that the Roman military intelligence of the period had not assessed as possible. Gorund was forty-six years old. He has been updating his assessment of orc capabilities ever since.

Points of interest

The Varakh gateway faces south onto the most commercially active approach in the range -- the road to the trade post is better maintained than any other stretch of road in Provincia Montium Ferri, a fact that the provincial road maintenance crews attribute to dwarven standards and that Gorund Vel-Ash, when told this, described as an accurate inference. The gateway's lintel carvings are the second most extensive in the range after Thalgrimm, recording the Vel-Ash bloodline's eleven centuries of Thane-succession in detail that Roman epigraphers have been attempting to fully decode since the third century.

The trade post itself is a landmark of a different kind: the most cosmopolitan location within a two-day ride of the Iron Spine, where dwarven commercial staff, Roman merchants, halfling factors operating under the crossing agreement, and the occasional orc trader appearing under Gorund's personal diplomatic arrangement sit in proximity that exists nowhere else on the primary continent. The exchange schedule -- Dwarven on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Latin on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, silence on weekends -- has been running without revision for nine centuries. Varro has spent more time at this post than at any other point of Roman-dwarven contact outside Thalgrimm. He rates the silence on weekends as the most restful working environment he has found.

The Duum-Vel-Khar does not terminate at Varakh's junction. A western spur, sealed and maintained, extends approximately forty kilometres further into the mountain toward the natural cave systems that connect, at depth, to the root of the Silva Borealis geology. The Khazadum have used this spur intermittently for surveillance of the northern approaches -- the cave system provides a passive monitoring position for giant movement in the taiga belt. Gorund Vel-Ash has expanded this surveillance capacity in the past two years in response to orc Grak'thun inquiries about what Rome is doing in the deep roads. He does not know where those inquiries are coming from. He suspects it is not the orcs' own idea.
