Varcanai Barracks (Far-can-I-Bar-racks)

Fast as Light and Sharp Like a Needle.

C.R. Eede
Varcanai Barracks:
  • Name: The Caelorian Barracks (later amended to Varcanai Barracks)
  • Motto: "Justice is thine shield and glory, thy spear."
  • Crest: One Hyphicen head with saer branches weaving in and out of its antlers.
  • Symbolism: Devotion, Courage, Humility, and Dignity.
  • Recognition: 2997 NE
  • Contribution: It is the national identity of Aethel Caeloria, leads its citizens, acts as a focus for unity and pride, recognises success and excellence, gives a sense of continuity, supports voluntary service, maintains alliances and forges new ones, conducts regular council gatherings, fairly distributes finances, and more.
  • Location: Underneath Dihavanor's Sphere, C'avarnia
The Varcanai Barracks are located underneath Dihavanor's Sphere and within the Community of Varcanai, in the centre of history's deep excavation. The Varcanai Barracks is where the military resides. The barracks have multiple floors, which everyone within the Varcanai Guard utilises. The Commander, Commander, Squadron Leaders, and soldiers can all fit in this building as it is long like a tower, vast and covers a lot of room, rendering the roots of the Starlight Veil to wrap itself around it.

Structure

The Ranking System: While the Varcanai Guard is officially one army, there is a formal structure to its ranks:
  • The Commander
  • The Captain
  • The Squadron Leaders
  • The Guards
Elves in the Varcanai Guard cannot rise to ranks other than a leader delegated by the Commander or Captain. However, suppose the sovereign of Aethel Caeloria deems someone fit and trustworthy enough to enter his position as a leader. In that case, he will ask to see them directly as a reward for their excellent work. There is only one Commander and one Captain throughout Aethel Caeloria, but there can be multiple squadron leaders due to the army's size.   The Current Titles:
  • Commander: Linthuwai Aalarelai
  • Captain: Ravor M'ithai
  • Squadron Leaders: Hasa M'ithai, Ayred Tythal, and many others.

Culture

The culture within the Varcanai Barracks is highly mixed but is prone to change depending on who is the reigning sovereign. During Filarion Aalarelai's reign, the Varcanai Guard bore a traditionalist culture, which opposed any form of change and would harshly punish minor crimes. Under this rule, the guards followed his soloist rule and would protect the native parts of the land instead of everyone. However, under Vaeril Aalarelai's direction, the guards are willing to help anyone and show their compassionate sides to those unable to fend for themselves. The Varcanai Guard becomes a virtuous military with the voluntary willingness to move the kingdom forward with the times under the rule of their reigning modernistic monarch.    Due to the Varcanai guard bearing a mix of elflings, adolescents, adults, and elderly folk, the culture is mixed with different views on handling situations. Many elderly elves want to stick to traditionalism and follow King Filarion's methods, whereas younger generations want to take the modern approach and follow Vaeril's ways. This can make resolution difficult sometimes. Overall, the guards will always follow the orders of their superiors regardless of what the task is and who wears the crown.

Public Agenda

The Promise of the Varcanai Guard: The Varcanai Guard must make a promise upon affiliation into the military service to ensure they are genuinely devoted to the cause. Promise as below:
  • Soldier Promise: "I promise to wield moral integrity without failure, loyalty to the crown and my kin, and protection to those unable to defend themselves from harm. I shall never forsake this vow, for if I do, I will forsake my people, titles, and integrity. My honour will be stripped and my name shattered. Only elevation will see my knightly duties lifted and death, my burdens fulfilled."
Ranked Affirmations:
  • Commander Promotion: "*elf name*, I pronounce you, Commander of the Varcanai Guard. May your sword be as sharp as your words."
  • Captain Promotion: "*elf name*, I pronounce you, Captain of the Varcanai Guard. May your shield be as resolute as your reputation."
The Commander and the Captain don't have specific promises to speak aloud because upon initiation into the Varcanai Guard, they would have spoken the generic soldier's one.   General Rules of Aethel Caeloria:
  • Do not steal or vandalise properties
  • Do not assault or murder
  • Do not disturb the peace
  • Do not slander another for personal benefit
  • Do not trespass on another's property
  • Do not engage in non-consensual intercourse
  • Do not engage in intercourse with elves from other lands
  • Do not break your oath/promise
  • Help your neighbours or those in need
  • Report to the Virtuous Order for any potential crimes
  • Be compassionate in your daily musings
  • Do not leave waste in public
  • Be kind in your shares
  • Travel to other kingdoms with permission from the Varcanai Guard. If necessary, a guard will accompany elves and cargo for protection purposes.
  • Respect the three holy days, royal name days and passings, and significant ceremonies.
Specific Rules of the Kingdom (Filarion's Rule):
  • It is a crime to be in a same-sex relationship.
  • There can be no intercourse with elves from other kingdoms.
  • There can be no more than two genders throughout the entire kingdom.
  • There can be no alternative forms of religion other than worship to Nelaeryn.
  • No elves of colour or disablement may live within Aethel Caeloria.
Specific Rules of the Kingdom (Vaeril's Rule):
  • Same-sex relationships are allowed.
  • There can be no intercourse with elves from other kingdoms.
  • Differences and elves of colour are welcome.
  • Religion can vary within the kingdom's borders.
  • Foreign elves can reside within the kingdom for trade and travel only.
The Varcanai Guard's Agenda: The Varcanai Guard's job is to patrol all areas within Aethel Caeloria and offer protection where they can; therefore, House M'ithai and Tythal have Varcanai Guards stationed throughout their territories and within the border forts. The Varcanai Guard also protects the Heavenly Gate to ensure the Vithra remain controlled within a deep enclosed area. The guard's primary purpose is to offer support to the natives, protect everyone from harm, and enforce the laws of the crown when necessary, which is usually during celebrations.   The rules and agenda of the Varcanai Guard are placed on a large wooden plaque within the Varcanai Barracks as a continual reminder of their duties.

Assets

The roots of the Starlight Veil delve deep into the mountain and beyond its lands, and a few of them are wrapped around the Varcanai Barracks, making it a stable establishment underground and a centre point for directions. There are many accompanying assets to the Varcanai Barracks because it is a part of the Community of Varcanai and directly beneath Dihavanor's Sphere. Assets as below:
  • Dihavanor's Sphere: The stone architectural structures around the Starlight Veil form a sphere that protects the tree from danger when extended and set in place. This only happens when imminent danger occurs. These structures are comprised of the most robust stone but patterned in white marble. This is the only moving structure in C'avarnia and is the last structural defence for the Starlight Veil. Besides the entrance and to the sides of Dihavanor's Sphere are two sets of stone staircases turned into pathways that descend deep into the mountain.
  • Starlight Veil Roots: The roots of the Starlight Veil dive deep into the mountain surrounding houses with their branches and hairs. A large double helix-shaped root descends deep into the mountain's core, later branching out towards other lands. This double-helix can be found falling behind the barracks.
  • Community of Varcanai: This community descends to the bottom of the mountain and consists of the population of C'avarnia's elves, with more than 350,000 homes within. The roots of the Starlight Veil are wrapped around each house too. Every home within the mountain is made of the same rock, and some have other smooth stones added to them. The streets of the community are evident, ensuring no one gets lost. The Varcanai Barracks is the centre point of the area.
Varcanai Barracks Architecture:
  • Exterior Architecture: The establishment itself takes the form of a long square tower descending further down into the mountain. The stone is made from anthracite and limestone, which is strong enough to hold a long building in the centre of the mountain without additional aid.
  • The Entrance: There is a black double door with saer ringed knobs on either side. To the side of the door is a rectangular window fitted into the rock of the building. Upon entry is the dining hall, where long wooden tables with stools tucked underneath them. There is a large array of tables connected to ensure the soldiers socialised. A fireplace is at the far end of the room, where a smaller saer seat sits for the king/prince. Next to the sear seat are two copper seats for the commander and captain.
  • Aroma: The building always smells of firewood, mead, fresh lilies, or fresh bread.
  • Lighting and Glasswork: The illumination within the entire building is used through candlelit scones, lanterns, and the fireplace on the top floor. Though unnecessary, the building has clear glass panes fitted into the rock with white curtains attached.
  • The Roof: The roof of the building is made of rock but is completely flat and covered by the roots of the Starlight Veil.
  • The Interior: The building walls are the same throughout, neutral but decorated to what the soldiers wanted. A picture of the late Harva Paylinn and banished Rhistel Elralei hung within the dining hall inside a golden frame as a way for the soldiers to pay their respects to two unique elves of the kingdom. Along the walls are also racks of weaponry, decorative armour, and art from local artists depicting the Varcanai Guard in their image.
  • Accommodation: Below the dining hall is the accommodation setting, which spirals down the tower to the bottom of the building. There is a long wooden spiral staircase around the tower's edge with multiple floors where the soldiers can sleep and recuperate. Each floor had over 1,000 beds and chests for personal belongings, making each floor vast.
The Varcanai Barracks looks like an ordinary building nearer the spiral stairs descending from Dihavanor's Sphere. Still, once elves follow the paths even further, they realise just how large the building is and how far down it goes.

Specific Details:
  • The Royal Guards Changing: During King Dihavanor Aalarelai's reign, he decided that the Royal Guard needed an upgrade; therefore, he redesigned their armour and ensured they looked fit for the part. The armour was changed from leather to plated leather, and they each wore a cloak with the Sigil of House Aalarelai finely embroidered into it. He also doubled their training schedules and made national service compulsory for elves and elfas; however, the national service could be in any field, not just the military. His primary focus was on the military, though, as he cared deeply for the welfare of his people and wanted them protected as best as possible. All elves' sacrifices would not go unnoticed.
  • The Starlight Veils Gift: Once Dihavanor Aalarelai changed the armour of the royal guards, the Starlight Veil wanted its people to be protected as best as they could, so the tree infused a large white staff with mystical saer properties of its stream. This infusing created two blades within the centre of the staff, allowing for it to be divided and changed into two short swords. The guards could either use the staff as a double-ended spear or two short swords, which provided them with more protection. The Starlight Veil also placed an image into Garavei Aalarelai's mind (the seed of the tree) and created a diamond-shaped saer and cerulean blue metallic shield with a chrome body, allowing those opposing to see their reflection before striking, which rendered a moment of stillness. It was a blinding moment for enemies and gave the wielder an advantage to strike.
  • Insight's Deceit: Once the ancient recurve bow, Insight, was passed over to Dihavanor Aalarelai by his god, Nelaeryn, he needed to infuse a small part of his blood into it to ensure only the Aalarelai bloodline could use it, thus making it more potent against his foes. This caused problems in Aethel Caeloria. The royal guards wanted a bow as divine as their kings, so they began to infuse their blood into the archery bows they found to try and make it more powerful. However, it had the reverse effect, and all they did was deprive themselves of blood, eventually killing themselves from severe blood loss. Insight was a powerful weapon and the only one that Dihavanor Aalarelai could use. Dihavanor concluded that his people were suffering at the beauty and power insight withheld, so he hid it as soon as he could and banned any use of archery bows within the kingdom ever again.
  • Downfall: This is when the leaders of each kingdom drove back the forces of evil into an eternal slumber and claimed victory over the land. However, each race sustained heavy losses; the ground was forever stained in the blue blood of elves and shadowy beings alike, darkening over time. The forsaken commanders were driven into darkness by the kingdom leaders using their ancient weapons with a seal of entrapment. The commanders were trapped in a state of dormancy. Once trapped, each seal was taken to a remote part of the planet and hidden in the most dangerous places. This left the remaining evil forces to be wiped out by the elves and the aftermath to begin.
  • Re-building Aethel Caeloria: During this time, a lot of changes took place in Aethel Caeloria. Multiple parts of the kingdom were re-positioned to align with the Starlight Veil in the centre of the kingdom. Everyone, including the royal family, united to rebuild their kingdom and make it impenetrable to outside forces.
  • The Royal Guards Changing II: Filarion Aalarelai decided to change the way national service worked in the kingdom, so he made it optional instead of compulsory, and the fields elves could serve in varied from agricultural, military, financial, educational, religious, or medicinal. After 80-100 years of serving, elves had the option to leave or remain. Many choose to stay due to the level of care and protection they receive from those in command, making the kingdom well-protected and fruitful.

Demography and Population

Aethel Caeloria is a large kingdom compared to its counterparts. Aethel Caeloria's population holds an estimated 396,000-400,000 elves, including the royal bloodline and neighbouring houses.

Military

The Varcanai Barracks consist of the Varcanai Guard and its ranking positions, from the commander to the squadron leaders. Though the building has guards throughout it, two alternating guards stand outside the building for protection purposes, as is their duty.

Religion

Religion isn't widely practised throughout Aethel Caeloria; however, the Virtuous Order does worship their God, Nelaeryn, to a minimal extent. Minimal meaning abiding by his teachings, appreciating all he has given to the high elves, and thanking him every day for the life he has given them. Some may light a candle or lay flowers at his shrine, Nelaeryn Y'vaphasai.

Foreign Relations

Qeruma is a strong ally of the Varcanai Guard, with assassins of the Daireel often visiting the Varcanai Barracks for assignments and patrol tasks. The Varcanai Guard closely collaborates with the Daireel, forging a solid alliance between the two kingdoms through national service. This allows two-way kingdom integration and establishes valuable connections for the future.

Trade & Transport

Transport: Transport mainly consists of horseback riding and wagon management. Horses are used for long-distance destinations. On the other hand, horses used wagons to carry heavier items from one land to another.   Trade: Food often comes from the Ivory Orchid and travellers. At the same time, weaponry and armour are important from the great kingdom, Qeruma, and the neighbouring lands of Aethel Caeloria, House Tythal and House M'ithai.

Education

Varcanai Guard Education:
  • Self Defence: Elflings must attend the Varcanai Guard and, if selected, the Caelorian Incline throughout their entire elflinghood.
  • National Service: All elves within Aethel Caeloria are expected to endure 80-100 years of national service in whichever field they prefer. During this time, elves are taught the basics of life, personal development, and more.
  • International Community Service: Elves within the Varcanai Guard must go through international community service within Qeruma and alongside the Qerumian Guard to ensure they gain the relevant experience outside of the kingdom.

Infrastructure

The Infrastructure:
  • Jujinal Wall: Around the outside of the entire kingdom is the impenetrable wall of Jujinal carved during 2397 NE – 1675 NE. This wall was carved to resemble a crown from an isometric and bird-eye viewpoint. From a direct point of view, it appears to be a towering structure.
  • Sewage: This is controlled through drains found throughout the kingdom. The sewage of the kingdom is filtered and then released beyond the Ca'rthavial Vales to ensure no harm comes to the waters and sea life.
  • Roads/Pathways: All roads within the kingdom of Aethel Caeloria are connected from Dihavanor's Sphere in the centre. The roads expand out towards House M'ithai, House Tythal, the Ca'rthavial Vales and along the kingdom's borders.
  • Dihavanor's Sphere: A large stone-like structure oversees the protection of the Starlight Veil, closing when danger is imminent. At the sides of this area are two stone staircases that descend into the mountain, later turning into smooth pavements for elves to use.
  • The Starlight Veil: A sizeable autumn-blazed maple tree is in the kingdom's centre, which provides light to the entire kingdom. Its roots delve down into and pass the Varcanai Barracks.
  • The Community of Varcanai: These are the houses of all elves within C'avarnia and can be found deep into the mountain.

"Justice is thine shield and glory, thy spear."

The Varcanai Barracks: This is a long tower found deep within the mountain, Dukran. It houses over 250,000 fighting elves who are the protectors of Aethel Caeloria, the Varcanai Guard.
Ranks: While the Varcanai Guard is officially one army, there is a formal structure to its ranks:
