Vaeril Aalarelai (Fair-ill-Ah-lar-re-lay)

The Saer Stag

C.R. Eede

Prince Vaeril Aalarelai Aalarelai- Vvenali (a.k.a. Saer Stag)

Primary Protagonist:
  • Name: Vaeril Aalarelai (Vare-ill)/(Fair-ill) - (Ah-lar-re-lay)
  • Gender: Elf
  • Race: Ca'rthavial Elf
  • Rank: Prince of Aethel Caeloria
  • Flaws: Mentally Conflicted, Repressed, and Overambitious.
  • Qualities: Dependable, Honourable, Loyal, and Humble.
  • Appearance: Ice white long hair with a twisted braid. Cornflower blue eyes, a glowing white outer iris, and white, fair skin. Long pointed ears are as sharp as a sword's tip and cheekbones so distinct they emit a faint glowing white light.
  • Personality: Few know the true Vaeril Aalarelai, but if there's anything you should know, it's that he's spontaneous and flexible. While he's friendly, determined and observant, he can also be rather argumentative. His political knowledge and vast combat experience have landed him in the spotlight in his father's eyes. His spontaneity and courage to do what's best for his people are what he's often admired for. The citizens feel at ease because they rely on this and can count on his insight when in need of aid. Vaeril has a share of darker sides to deal with, too, as he has no room to grow. Clouded by the perception and influence of his father, he hasn't been able to discover who he truly is. His desperation and laid-back nature aren't always the easiest to contend with, much to the frustration of others. Fortunately, his understanding usually softens the worst of it.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Vaeril is a highly athletic and proactive elf with a well-toned body. While he is physically fit, he does suffer from PTSD and depression, which is a mental affliction he has to deal with daily.

Facial Features

He has cornflower blue eyes, a glowing white outer circle, and white, fair skin. Long pointed ears are as sharp as a sword's tip and cheekbones so distinct they emit a faint glowing white light—Ice white long hair with a twisted braid.

Identifying Characteristics

A glowing white light that emits underneath his cheekbones, is his identifying facial feature.

Special abilities

Due to Vaeril being a Ca'rthavial Elf, he is immune to natural starlight, taking minor damage from its blinding and forceful power.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

As an elfling, Vaeril was quite rebellious, questioning everything and wanting to invoke change there and then, which his father harshly punished and disciplined him for. This made Vaeril's elflinghood a complicated and emotionally tumultuous one. As an adolescent, he learned what it meant to be a dutiful soldier to the crown. He also learned to keep his beliefs to himself, for the fear of judgement was high, especially among his kin who were traditionalists in their ways of thinking. Vaeril was a combination of traditional and modern, causing a slight internal conflict. A lot of what his father believed in, he did not, which caused the two of them to clash.   Later on, as a young adult, Vaeril learns what it is to be the acting King of Aethel Caeloria while struggling with his personal feelings over losing his betrothed and his elfling. During his father's naval pursuits, Vaeril places duty above personal feelings, arresting his best friend, Rhistel and three Talvahna's living within the kingdom. Upon Filarion's return, Vaeril is faced with his father's lies, which he made to Rhistel and later broke for the kingdom's sake. Vaeril comes to learn of this promise, viewing his father in a different light from what he initially did. Unfortunately, he had to witness the banishment of his best friend, leaving him in a state of mental agony knowing that his two best friends were no longer around.   As time progressed, Vaeril learned of the segregation of the Howlite Clan based on the accord set by his forebears. He wanted to eradicate that change but was conflicted with the traditionalist values of his people. He later learns of the atrocities Aethel Caeloria sets upon elves of colour, which is when he confronts his father about it. Vaeril speaks with the D'ivalorth regarding Rhistel, offering him solace where she could. While she could only do so much, he recalls the Lord of House Yyruma uttering the words, 'Nihil,' and asking the D'ivalorth to look into it for him. He then spends his time securing the borders of Aethel Caeloria due to the sighting of an old enemy of the kingdom and the thrice-struck clan getting closer to the lands. Once the mercenaries attack, Vaeril is sent to protect the neighbouring houses with Linthuwai Aalarelai, who both separate to watch different areas.   When the King is found dead in Varcanai Palace, Vaeril is heartbroken and refuses to talk with anyone, going on a killing spree to eradicate all mercenaries in his way. In his absence, his mother, Lensa, deals with funeral arrangements while mourning her husband. Ralnor Aalarelai temporarily sits on the throne in Vaeril's absence. This is when Vaeril becomes particularly close with Viykar, who sees him swinging his swords in anger and sadness in the Summergloss fields.    Due to the death of his father, his best friends' banishment and death, and Harva Paylinn's merciless death, Vaeril grew in anger, refusing to allow light to enter his life for a long time. He was plagued with darkness, making decisions that he knew would cause conflict between his people, but he did it anyway, not caring for the repercussions. This was a dark time for Vaeril, having been plagued by unresolved mental trauma.   At the end of the book, Vaeril attends the funeral of his father, Filarion, along with his loyal subjects, the entirety of Aethel Caeloria, House Tythal, and House M'ithai, and prepares for his succession to kingship.

Gender Identity

Vaeril Aalarelai has never questioned his gender identity, knowing he is an elf. However, he does accept others' gender identities, whether they are elf, elfa, xlf, or everything else in between. UNlike his kin, he is seen more as a modernist accepting and tolerating change in people's personal preferences.

Sexuality

Vaeril is only attracted to elfas and bears no judgement for others who identify otherwise.

Education

Vaeril has been trained by the best of the best throughout Aethel Caeloria and Qeruma. See below   Aethel Caeloria:
  • The Royal Family: Vaeril was taught by the reigning sovereigns and his kin to learn everything necessary to prepare him for future responsibilities. The King and his brother cover the fundamental knowledge of Aethel Caelorian history and manners in modern-day society, how to greet elves from other kingdoms, the fundamental laws and customs of global royal leadership, and more. However, the Queen and her sister(s) cover the social, emotional, physical, cognitive and language aspects of life to help with development later on.
  • The King: Vaeril shadowed his father's work to gain more experience in all of his responsibilities, thus carrying the burden of duty from an early age. The more experience gained, the more prepared for future kingship he became.
  • House Tythal: He was taught the value of the sword and all it has to offer. He was also taught how to choose and recruit new soldiers.
  • House M'ithai: He was taught the value of tending to nature and all it has to offer. He was also taught how to fairly distribute and preserve profit via their treasury.
  • The Varcanai Guard: This is where he undertook his years of national service as made compulsory for the royal bloodline.
  • The Caelorian Incline: He was hand-chosen by the leader of this elite military group to train and become the best fighter that he could be, learning techniques and weapon tactics that others could only dream of perfecting.
  • The Glazed Temple: He was taught how to be a compassionate and an understanding elf, equal to his fellow citizens and willing to lay down his lives for them. He also learned the value of knowledge and its contents.
  • The Chosen: The High Priest and Priestess taught Vaeril the principles of Nelaeryn from the Haven of Solaris alone due to the importance of their god's divine words. Furthermore, these priests taught him as an elfling the subjects of atonement and prayer, giving him the tools he needed to respect their god. As a Ca'rthavial Elf, he is known to bear a holy line of communication with Nelaeryn through his dreams.
  • The Elders of Claritas: He was educated on the laws of the land by the Elders of Claritas, including who and why these laws should be enforced on the people. Additionally, he learned how to hold court alongside the elders and how one must act in such a high-ranking role.
In Qeruma:
  • The houses of Qeruma (Zurqeru and Yyruma) taught Vaeril how to accept diversity and equality into his life, offering him a new outlook on life. He learned the value of forging alliances, learning about other cultures, and understanding that there is always more than one choice available. He knew how to make meaningful friendships with other races of elves, different to his own, and that modernism isn't bad as it allows for steady progression for future generations.

Employment

Vaeril works as the Prince of Aethel Caeloria, carrying out his father's tasks, Filarion. Additionally, he works for the people and elves in Qeruma, ensuring standards remain the highest they could be. His highest priority is the people's welfare and protection.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Vaeril has surpassed many achievements in his time as the prince. See below:   Accomplishments:
  • Birth and Name Day: The people and royal family considered his birth and name day a massive accomplishment.
  • Varcanai Guard: He completed his years of national service in the Varcanai Guard.
  • Caelorian Incline: He completed his basic, enhanced, and advanced training in the Caelorian Incline while volunteering as a mentor alongside the head and the associates.
  • Education: He completed his education with the Elders of Claritas, High Priest and Priestess, the Varcanai Healers, House M'ithai, House Tythal, the Royal Family, and Qerumite Leadership.
  • The Three Springs Tournament: He passed this with flying colours. The tournament determines whether someone is fit to lead through a series of challenging mental and physical events. He must also participate in this shortly after his coronation as king.
  • Qerumite Leadership Alliance: Vaeril became close friends with the people and leaders of Qeruma, becoming someone they could rely on.
  • House M'ithai and Tythal Alliance: Vaeril became good friends with the elves within the neighbouring houses of Aethel Caeloria.
  • The Caelorian Incline Friends: Vaeirl became friends with the head and associates of the Caelorian Incline through voluntary mentorship.
  • The Howlite Clan Alliance: He sparked a friendship between a prejudiced group, going against his father's wishes and kickstarting the beginning of his rule with modern change, breaking away from former traditions.
  • Letting Go of his Sister: He had to let his sister go to become the Seed of the Starlight Veil, which was one of the hardest things he had to do, considering he loves her with all his heart.
  • Wars and Conflicts: Vaeril has partaken in various wars and conflicts in and outside his kingdom, fighting for his people and territory against those who wanted to tear it down or harm the high elves. This, in turn, has given him vast combat experience.

Failures & Embarrassments

Failures:
  • His First Kill: He refused to murder a mercenary who vowed to change his ways, which made him believe Vaeril was weak in his father's eyes. It took him days to do this.
  • Letting his Sister Go: Vaeril tried to argue with his father that Zestari should remain with her family, but his father would not allow it, ensuring that she fulfilled her duty as the Seed of the Starlight Veil.
  • Questioning Tradition: Vaeril has always questioned tradition, but his father would not allow him to change his ways, disciplining him harshly. Every time Vaeril offered a modernist change for the kingdom, his father would look at him disappointedly, believing he had failed his son.
  • His Compassion: Vaeril has consistently refused to kill someone for a good reason. His compassion often clouds his judgement, which he perceives as a personal failure.
  • An Elfling's Mercy: During a war alongside the Caelorian Incline, Vaeril chanced upon an elfling who he was supposed to kill, but unwilling to do that, he protected the elfling and ensured they got to safety away from all the fighting. A Varcanai Guard witnessed this and told the king, who then scolded Vaeril for weeks for disobeying his command to kill everyone.
  • A Qerumite Embarrassment: King Filarion visited his son in Qeruma, where his international service was going well according to the people, but the king was not impressed, forcing him to undergo days and nights of harsh training with everyone watching and spectating. House Yyruma witnessed this and pitiedVaeril, knowing how hard he worked to become the best elf he could be for his people.
  • The Vithran Slaughter: After the murder of his betrothed and elfling at the Blades Edge Tournament, Vaeril made his way into the Heavenly Gate with Viykar and a few Caelorian Incline soldiers, taking his frustration out on a baby Vithra by killing it until its face became unrecognisable. He believed this to be a failure because he stripped away a baby's life from its mother, just as Oishara did to Vaeril.

Mental Trauma

Two events have caused Vaeril mental trauma:
  • Harva Paylinn: The death of his betrothed at the hands of Oishara Urdjin of Eyraeshir at the Blades Edge Tournament. Harva was with elfling, killing the future sovereign of Aethel Caeloria.
  • Rhistel Elralei: The banishment of his best friends at the hands of his father, who went against his word, promising to protect Rhistel and his kin.
While there have been many other instances of mental suffering, the above caused the most mental trauma, given these two elves meant the most to him. Without them, he feels alone and lost.

Intellectual Characteristics

Vaeril has many intellectual characteristics. See below:
  • Integrity: Vaeril treats others with kindness while avoiding harm and outwardly projecting this characteristic, thus eliminating double standards.
  • Autonomy: He uses his ability to reason and think critically. This is handy because he doesn't rely on others to think quickly.
  • Perseverance: He manages to work through any difficulties with determination, regardless of the challenge he is presented with. He won't give up.
  • Empathy: Vaeril actively places himself (mentally) in someone else's shoes trying to understand how they think and feel. He strives to understand someone else's point of view before responding to it.
  • Humility: Vaeirl admits that he doesn't know everything, making himself willing to learn new ways of life, growing with age and acknowledging his limitations. This is why he often consults the D'ivalorth and Maevil with challenging matters.
  • Courage: Vaeril stands up for his beliefs, especially when it's difficult to do so. He will particularly stand up for his beliefs to invoke positive change in a situation.
  • Reason: He utilises the elements of thought and looks at all the evidence and relevant points of view to arrive at meaningful conclusions.
  • Respect: He treats people with the utmost care and compassion, regardless of who they are.
  • Healthy scepticism. He will accept, at some point, that something is known.
  • Imagination: Imagination never leaves him as he wants his people to succeed and flourish with the times.
  • Self-Reflection: Vaeril does this to ensure he is the best he can be, avoiding past mistakes through peering in hindsight.

Morality & Philosophy

Taboos

Vaeril has learned of a few taboos, which he doesn't particularly like:
  • Tattoos: He doesn't understand the yearning behind getting a tattoo, considering it permanently stains the skin with ink.
  • Slavery: He is wholly against elves working for nothing and as another's property.
  • Elven Sacrifices: He disagrees with elves being used in blood rituals/sacrifices to the gods.
  • Racism: Vaeril despises racism, believing everyone should have a fair shot at life regardless of colour.
  • Sexism and Prejudice: He disagrees with elfas and xlfs being prejudiced for what they were born as.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Vaeril's motivation lies with his people. All he wants is what's best for them and will do whatever is necessary to ensure they are well cared for, mentally and physically. After the death of his betrothed, Harva, and his father, Filarion, his motivations changed and became solely for the people who relied on him to get things done.   He strives to make Aethel Caeloria as diverse and inclusive as other kingdoms, steering away from traditionalism and more towards modernism.

Quotes & Catchphrases
Vaeril has said many phrases during his time as prince/king. See below:
  • "How can you expect me to forgive someone who does not realise the pain they have caused?"
  • "That's the thing about love. It doesn't always last forever. Sometimes it's taken away from you."
  • "You are nothing more than an empty vessel seeking the affection and compassion of others."
  • "If you value freedom so much, why take the choices of others away without first consulting them? Doing this means you've taken their freedom away and already made the decision. They cannot live if they cannot make their own choices. You have your freedom. Now let them have theirs. It is not yours to take."
  • "I would rather suffer a blade through my beating heart than witness the downfall of my beloved again. It should have been me, not her. It is with a heavy heart I say this. She meant every breath and was worth every second, but now I gasp for air without her in my presence."
  • "Do you know what hurts the most about losing someone who was once close to you? The memories because they stay with you forever. Knowing that you won't be able to create with that person is heart-breaking. That's what the loss of life is, a gaping wound that takes years to heal."
  • "You've destroyed everything I held dear, but I'm still standing. Do your worst."
  • "You call yourself a leader? I believe you are nothing more than a cruel tyrant. If you truly want to lead, try being amongst those who fight on the frontlines. Nothing is known without the experience, and that's something you lack."
  • "I sit here wondering about the pits of eternal despair. Tell me, father, when will this nightmare end?"
  • "I refuse to be less so that you can be more."

Author's Notes

"Remember the tale of King Uther and Prince Arthur? Well, that's the story I have going for Vaeril and his father, Fialrion. I used to love the story of Camelot and remembered the complicated relationship between the two individuals, which eventually caused a hostile rift. Inspired by this, I wanted to twist it into a fantasy setting and create what I believe is a work of art, showing the complications between father and son and their conflicting views on what's best for their kingdom."
