The Nest of the Songless Bird

A poem scrawled down a staircase inside Vicra Lammergeyer's lair

My ears cannot hear you, songless bird.
Your voiceless carol calls unheard.
You sing silently, through my ribs and rage,
To a captive inside a sinuous cage.

Meat and muscle fail to feel
The serenade to soul's ordeal.
The soul responds through gasping word
Inspiring the songless bird.

An artist of flesh and bone and breath
To build it a prison worthy of death.
