Aertrea was likely the second world formed during the initial burst of creation at the start of the prime material plane, although no one knows this for sure. Like Aer, The First World, Aertrea is a large planet with several moons, an arctic region at each pole and tropical climates around the equator. Also like Aer, Aertrea has strong connections to the elemental and energy planes, although its ley lines, natural gates, and nodes are not as robust as the First World (but far more energetic than most other worlds). The presence of these planar connections, with new ones forming as old ones dissipating plays a major role in Aertrea's geography and weather.
Leylines channel energy, whether elemental or positive or negative along channels, often underground, but sometimes on the surface or even in the air. This brings a strong influence of that energy into the area. Along those lines are areas of greater concentration, these nodes are natural depositories of energy and feed the surrounding areas like natural springs. Particularly potent nodes may contain gates, usually "mini-gates" that allows planar material to flow directly into the prime material. Most such gates are small and unstable, but some are nearly permanent and can be very large. Nodes are particularly powerful where ley lines cross, creating very unpredictable and strong combinations of elemental materials and planar energies.

Layered on top of Aertrea's planar connections which brings a constant and shifting amount of matter and energy into the world, is the unique life energy found everywhere on the planet, known as the Fey. Difficult to quantify its part of the spark that gives life, its part of the "glue" that holds together materials, and its fluidity that makes magic possible. Fey energy interacts well with elemental forces and energy. It does not interact well with arcane energy (a general term for magic containing a majority of Anas, the natural force of Aer). The "conflict" between Anas and Fey is a central facet of life on Aertrea.
This is not to say that Anas and Fey can not coexist. Anas is so prevalent in life forms on Aertrea that both forces can be found just about everywhere. The problems arise when the concentration of Fey energies becomes too great. Higher concentrations of Fey energy can react unpredictably and dangerously when exposed to Anas. Some have likened this reaction to a being's immune system reacting to a virus. Some theorize that the Fey energy has some sort of intelligence and will and has, and may continue to, actively work against the intrusive Anas.
Aertrea developed life independent of other worlds for several ages. Fed by the influx of elemental and planar energies, the Fey forces evolved into many life forms, many like plants, were common to other words. Some early life was unique to Aertrea such as the various elven peoples and Faery species.
In summary, there are a number of components that make Aertrea relatively unique. The first is the invasion of the Anasestra and their Anas energy. These creatures shaped many of the native species, changing forever their forms and traits. At the same time, Anas came into conflict with Fey with unpredictable results. Lastly, a strong connection to the elemental and energy planes have created ever changing patterns of ley lines, nodes, and gates that feed the planet planar energies and materials.
