Elven Airsteel

The sunlight glinted off the lightly-armoured Elven warrior, her fine Elven Longsword poised and ready to strike. The intricate, rose-coloured etchings across her breastplate seemed to paint a picture of her glorious past. With one deft movement she struck the Hobgoblin’s eye through his thin slit of helmet, and twirled as if in a dance, avoiding his clumsy attack.   There are many kinds of ore, metals, and forged items throughout all of Aerith. Many races are adept at forging and creating weapons and armour of exceptional quality. Dwarves, Goliaths, and Humans make excellent heavy weapons and armour, items of solid use that help protect their races, and make life easier. Elves and Gnomes make lighter, more intricate, and specialized items that combine beauty with functionality.   Three types of specialized metals can be found on Starhelm; Airsteel, Rocksteel, and Moonsteel . The items they create are unique and wondrous. The light and precise Elven metal called Airsteel is detailed below.     Airsteel is a rare metal forged by the Elves. Taken from a long-lost art back in their days of the Avariel, Airsteel is a light but brittle metal, making it ideal to hit but lacking for dealing damage. It is an item of precision and finesse that mirrored the style of combat the ancient Avariel favoured. In the many years that have passed Airsteel has degraded from its original composition and many do not even recognize the Avariel influence on it anymore.   Many Airsteel weapons and armour have intricate carvings, depictions of angelic creatures, spidery script, or delicate bas-relief etched into it. The Elves favour flexibility, freedom of movement, and quick strikes of precision in their weapons and armour; Airsteel provides just that. The item takes on a silvery colour and seems to absorb light and sound into it.   The process to create Airsteel involves magically enchanting Mithril in its liquid form. Shortly after the Elves came to Aerith they discovered the art of combining their old enchantments when they were Avariel to the new metals of Aerith. Few Elves still know the complex process to create Airsteel but there are at least two in both Brightbough and Aspenshield, as well as a select number in some larger Elven settlements in both forests. The cost of so much Mithril to create a single Airsteel item is very high, so more often now the Elves mix the Mithril with other metals. Most often copper is a substitute due to its light weight, and its low resistance to magic, but many would prefer to use gold if they can get it. The process for making Airsteel is still a big mystery to non-Elves but the cost in Mithril keeps most others from even bothering.   The qualities and benefits of Airsteel vary depending on the level of Airsteel present in the making of the item. Airsteel weapons are silent and near impossible to see. When making an attack with an Airsteel weapon while you are hidden, the attack does not reveal your location   Airsteel Shields are light and mobile. While wielding an Airsteel shield it is treated as if you have a free hand.
