Players Handbook (page 35)
Your character is unusual, exceptional as compared to the norm. This applies to abilities and funds as well. Thus, he or she will have a large supply of coins with which to purchase equipment and supplies to begin adventuring.
House Rule
All characters start with 3gp, 17sp and 30cp (= 5gp in total). Nothing more in local currency. The cost of travelling to the start of campaign was already paid, and the 'carrier' has exchanged your gold coins at a very profitable rate for themselves. You're on your own from this point on.
In the County of Cerwyn (which does not include Aelintáriën or Haldurheim) the currency is simply in CP (10 for 1SP), SP (10 for 1GP) and GP. There is no other known coinage. The coins you would have been given for your travels would have been Cerwynese as you would have had no reason to hold onto your local currencies. If you travel to foreign lands, they may not hold as much value or they may hold more value, or the could be the same. Also the coinage has not lost or gained value in recent history, so if you see a gold coin stamped with an old monarch or head of state, it will be worth the same.
