The Cycle

The Cycle is the generally accepted theory on Aelladore's cycle of death, birth, and the soul. It is said that when a mortal dies, their soul passes on to the Cycle, where it is divided up into it's component parts (personality, lineage, etc.) and reassembled using other souls in order to create vastly unique entities, which are then born into the world as children.
While not everyone believes that the Cycle exists, or perhaps that it does quite what people say it does, there have been a not-insignificant number of accounts ever since the world began of a metaphysical space which exhibits these traits. The Cycle has thus become akin to the "hell" of the real world; a place where the "unsaved" go when they die, and something like a curse wished upon one's foes ("May the Cycle take you into it's loving embrace, cur!").
Some religions, if not most, tend to offer their faithful a paradise or other haven from the Cycle: a place where their soul may rest in perpetuity and continue the works of the religion in question as servants or some other role. Additionally, some people believe that if a mortal dies in a place where the Veil is too thin, that their soul will be unable to pass on to the Cycle.
