Illyria

Geography

The Titan’s Spine Mountains:
In the northwest of Illyria lies the Titan’s Spine Mountains, an immense range that stretches across the land like a jagged crown. These mountains, some of the tallest in Aeldrithius, boast snow-capped peaks that gleam like silver under the sun. Their sheer cliffs and sharp ridges create natural fortifications, making the region difficult to traverse. The lower slopes are carpeted in hardy alpine forests, where towering pines and frost-hardened shrubs cling to rocky outcrops. Here, glacial rivers carve deep gorges, tumbling down in spectacular waterfalls before feeding into the rivers below. As one ascends, the air grows thinner, and the forests give way to barren, windswept crags. In the heart of this range are hidden valleys, lush oases of life shielded from the elements by the towering peaks.   The Verdant Steppes:
The northeast of Illyria transitions into the Verdant Steppes, a vast expanse of gently rolling grasslands. These fertile plains extend for miles, an unbroken sea of green and gold during the growing seasons. The land here is smooth and open, with only the occasional plateau or cluster of weathered boulders breaking the horizon. Several rivers meander lazily through the steppes, their waters carving shallow valleys into the soft earth. These rivers create lush oases along their banks, where wildflowers bloom in vibrant hues and tall grasses sway in the breeze. The steppes are especially striking during the spring rains when the entire landscape is blanketed in emerald grasses and vivid blossoms. However, the land can quickly turn harsh, as summers are long and dry, causing the grasses to wither into a golden-brown expanse.   The Ebonwood Forests:
In the southeast, the geography shifts dramatically as the Ebonwood Forests take over the land. This region is cloaked in an ancient woodland that seems to breathe with a life of its own. The forest is an endless maze of towering trees whose trunks are as dark as coal, with canopies so thick they block out much of the sunlight. Beneath the canopy, the forest floor is a realm of shadow, illuminated only by the faint bioluminescence of mosses, mushrooms, and the amber-veined bark of the trees themselves. The terrain here is rugged and varied, with hidden glades, rolling hills, and deep, murky swamps scattered throughout the forest. Crystal-clear springs and creeks snake through the undergrowth, feeding into larger rivers that carve winding paths through the woodlands. The Ebonwood Forests are as treacherous as they are beautiful, with sudden drops, tangled roots, and hidden bogs that make navigation a constant challenge.   The Abyss of Vharyx:
In stark contrast to the lush forests of the southeast, the Abyss of Vharyx dominates the geography of the southwest. This enormous chasm splits the land as if carved by a divine blade. The walls of the abyss are sheer and precipitous, descending into seemingly endless darkness. In places, the chasm narrows to just over a hundred feet, while in others, it widens into vast cavernous expanses that swallow the light. The rock walls gleam with veins of obsidian, quartz, and mysterious glowing crystals, giving the chasm an otherworldly appearance. Along its edges, the terrain is rugged and unstable, with jagged outcroppings and fault lines that hint at the ongoing seismic activity in the region. Small tributaries and streams tumble into the abyss, creating waterfalls that disappear into the void below. Though the abyss itself is an empty maw, the surrounding lands are dotted with rocky plateaus and scattered forests, a stark contrast to the barren depths of the chasm.

Ecosystem Cycles

The Titan’s Spine Mountains:
The ecosystem of the Titan’s Spine Mountains is driven by the seasonal cycles of freezing and thawing. The harsh winters cover the peaks in snow and ice, creating reservoirs that slowly melt in spring and summer. This meltwater feeds the rivers and streams that flow down into the surrounding valleys, providing a steady source of fresh water to sustain life in the lower altitudes.   The alpine forests at the base of the mountains thrive during the short growing season, when sunlight and water are abundant. Hardy plants such as pines, mosses, and lichen play a crucial role in stabilizing the soil and preventing erosion. Herbivores like mountain goats and woolly hares feed on these plants, while predators such as snow leopards and great eagles ensure population control. As winter approaches, many animals enter hibernation or migrate to lower altitudes, aligning their life cycles with the rhythm of the mountains.   The Verdant Steppes:
The Verdant Steppes in the northeast are governed by cycles of growth and migration. Spring rains transform the steppes into a vibrant expanse of grasses and wildflowers, creating a temporary paradise for grazing animals. Herds of antelope, bison, and other herbivores follow ancient migration routes to take advantage of this seasonal bounty. In turn, predators such as wolves and skyhawks shadow the herds, maintaining balance.   As summer sets in, the grasses begin to wither, and water sources dwindle. The herds move on to more fertile areas, leaving behind seeds and nutrients that replenish the soil. This annual cycle of growth and retreat supports a dynamic ecosystem that relies on the constant movement of life. Even the semi-nomadic clans of Illyria’s steppes participate in this cycle, following their flocks and aiding in the redistribution of seeds and organic matter across the plains.   The Ebonwood Forests:
In the Ebonwood Forests of the southeast, life thrives in the shadows, driven by cycles of decay and renewal. Fallen leaves, branches, and trees decompose rapidly in the humid environment, returning nutrients to the soil and fostering the growth of new life. Mushrooms, fungi, and mosses are key players in this process, breaking down organic matter and forming symbiotic relationships with the roots of the towering Ebonwood trees.   The dense canopy limits sunlight to the forest floor, creating fierce competition among plants and animals for resources. Carnivorous plants, such as the luminescent snarevine, have adapted to these conditions, while nocturnal and bioluminescent creatures dominate the ecosystem. Predators such as shadowlynxes and whispering ravens regulate prey populations, ensuring that the balance of life remains intact. This cycle of constant decay and growth makes the Ebonwood a self-sustaining system.   The Abyss of Vharyx:
The ecosystem surrounding the Abyss of Vharyx operates on cycles of descent and emergence, shaped by the unique challenges of this fractured landscape. The chasm’s depths house an isolated and extreme ecosystem, where bioluminescent plants and fungi cling to the sheer rock walls, absorbing the faint magical energies that emanate from the abyss. Strange subterranean creatures, adapted to the perpetual darkness, emerge at night to forage on the surface.   Above the abyss, scavengers such as rock condors patrol the skies, preying on smaller creatures that venture too close to the edge. The surrounding plateaus experience periodic landslides and seismic activity, which redistribute minerals and create new habitats. These disturbances, while destructive, are essential to the cycle of renewal in this region, allowing hardy plants and pioneering species to colonise the freshly exposed soil. The abyss itself is a source of constant intrigue, as its depths occasionally expel strange crystals and organic matter, adding an enigmatic layer to the ecosystem’s cycles.

History

Fawn were the first species to be created on Illyria, existing from the very first day Aledrithius was born. Their kingdom is known as Cairnwood, where they lived in perfect harmony with other ruminant animals and centaurs. Although there’s the notion that fawn were first, they don’t consider themselves to be very dominant over the ruminant animals, rather seeing themselves as their older siblings where they help guide them.   Originally, there were kingdoms for each god that resided there; Mathiko, Akoiti, Avlia, and Inachi. Eventually though they were tired of acting as separate states, and so in 101 Avlia and Akoiti merged into one state, while Mathiko and Inachi merged into one. They all became great allies. While that was happening, some tribes of deer, horses, birds, and reptiles decided to venture west, creating tiny inter-connected city-states for the fun of it. And everything changed when the elves arrived in 168. While Cairnwood and Thyrolith weren’t willing to lend home to them, the city-states allowed them passage and granted them land in the north that they named Virdanora. It was very small however, and the elves wanted to expand. So in 213 they sieged border city-states, successfully conquering them and then some. They tried to conquer more, but the rest of the city-states had merged into one country, Avytherra, being only just barely strong enough to survive the relentless attacks from the elves. They never gave up on their attacks, prompting Cairnwood and Thyrolith to step in and lend aid, but none had the level of advanced tech that the elves had, and their borders were attacked too. Eventually in 247, Avytherra fell and became absorbed in the Virdanora kingdom.   In 346, satyr found their way into Illyria, settling in what’s currently known as Sylphros in the southwest. They also became allies with the neighouring kingdoms. Problem was, elves had claim over all the land in the West since 168, and they weren't willing to share it as they had made a vast empire out of the land they claimed and conquered. Knowing the elves were trouble makers, they stood their ground rather than attempting to assimilate. They had tech that rivalled the elves, and so were able to hold their ground. With the aid of neighbouring kingdoms, Sylphros was established as a tiny city-state in 349. It rapidly expanded as the satyr began rapidly producing more magical based tech, something the elves didn’t have. In 352 Sylphros launched an all-out attack on Virdanora, whittling their borders until they eventually surrendered, allowing them to take as much land as they wanted, and promising to not attack anyone in 353.   That promise didn’t last long, as in 450 they have discovered coal based tech, driving them mad with power as they sought to conquer land again, this time going after Thyrolith. The fighting didn’t stop until the year 500 when Abija personally stopped the war, and turned the continent into a giant country where individual kingdoms turned into provinces. She also banned the elves from using coal because of the environmental impact it was having. Since then everyone has lived in relative harmony, though there’s definitely still tension with the elves from Virdanora.
