Largrash Species in Aedeva | World Anvil

Largrash

Originally discovered as monstrous creatures native to the Grauffenbach Wastes, silently swinging among the trees before dropping upon their prey from above, tearing them apart with powerful limbs.   Now, many years after their discovery, Largrashes are prized working animals among the rich of the world. Their incredible strength and agility, endurance, and exotic lifecycle makes them particularly well suited for working the farms and mines of the elites throughout Aedeva.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Largrashes are heavily set, towering beasts. They have four thick-muscled arms nearly as wide as their body, dwarfing their short, but equally thick, legs. Their heads rest on necks so densely muscled as to be nearly indistinguishable from their torso.   Coating their layers of muscle and thick skin are carpets of thick fur matching the coloration of the leaves in their native habitats.   Altogether, the creatures weigh in at anywhere from 800 to 1500 pounds. Largrashes can grow to be up to 18ft long from fingertips to toetips when stretched out, or as tall as 12ft when standing on all fours like a gorilla.   Though the creatures bear some small resemblance to larger, stockier gorillas, most scholars agree that they have a completely different ancestry. Unfortunately, the creatures' brute strength and violent territorial nature make further studies incredibly difficult, so little research has been done in this area.

Genetics and Reproduction

Perhaps the oddest trait the Largrash possesses, and the single trait that most distinguishes it from the relatively similar gorilla, is its strange method of reproduction.   Largrashes, both male and female, lack external reproductive organs. Instead, their organs of note reside within the abdomen. For males, this organ rests atop the creature's massive stomach. For females, it serves as the pathway food must take to progress from the stomach to the intestines.   In order to reproduce, the male must first attract a mate by slaying a creature and offering it to the female as a meal. The larger the better. Males often compete for mates by slaughtering larger and larger beasts until eventually enticing the female in question. In this matter, female Largrashes are more than happy to accept one of the competing males' corpses as an offering.    Once the meal has been provided, the female devours it in one sitting. During this meal, the female's stomach expands to fit the meal, then spends the next several days funneling the food into the reproductive organ, which swells dramatically.   Once the reproductive organ has digested the meal, it detaches from the digestive tract and is drawn upward. The female then ejects it from her mouth and presents it to the male, who swallows it whole.   Over the next few months (the exact time is highly dependent on the original meal offering), the two organs merge within the male, slowly forming into a fledgling Largrash brain. Once the brain is fully formed, it begins building a head and torso, using the male's own body as building material. In order to compensate, the male greatly increases its meat consumption during the gestation.   Once the fledgling Largrash is fully formed it rips free from the male's body, emerging as a fully grown Largrash. The male rarely survives this process, usually becoming a meal for the newly born Largrash. They do occasionally manage to fight their offspring off though, retreating to tend to their wounds and regrow their legs.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Largrashes are known to have powerful senses of smell as well as the night vision that is common among most animals. Interestingly, the creatures rarely exhibit signs of any form of hearing, relying instead on feeling subtle vibrations in the trees in which they live. They seem to use this to find their prey before dropping from the treetops to rip their victims to shreds.
