RAS Sovereign
Service Record
Battle of Durasine Sound, 1761
in the year 1750 I was a young sailor and when the war broke out I was called into her majesties service in the Royal Acentian Navy. I was taken on board the RAS Sovereign, a 1st Rate ship of the line, she had 126 guns and 1200 souls aboard. After serving for several years and only seeing small action, our squadron was called to to meet up with the grand fleet near the isle of Tali in the west colonies. There the whole Navy was ammasing and there were at least 80 ships when we arrived late in 1761 and yet more soon arrived. Within the month we were again on the move to the southern colonies as the Admiralty had received word that an Allied fleet of around 90 ships was in the area to resupply and was raiding our colonies in the area. On July 14th we spotted the enemy fleet off the coast of the island of Durasine and promptly formed three lines of battle. we were (from what I could tell) the 7th ship in the middle line and we had the wind in our favor. The enemy fleet formed up to match us however as previously stated we had the wind and they weren't much moving. As the two fleets drew nearer I checked my gun crews and made sure that they were all loaded up. I, a midshipman, had 8 gun crews under me, all with 12 pound guns. We could hear the first ships in the line begin firing though we could not see the enemy as of yet. Promptly Down came the order to make ready the guns and hold fire until told. After a few tense moments the massive hulk of an enemy first rate ship of the line, with its blue and yellow painted hull slowly began passing by. We waited nervously for the order to fire. The enemy ship was full of holes and some were large enough we could see the crew inside. Finally the command to fire echoed down and we let loose a hurricane of round shot into the enemy ship and there was much rejoicing. That is until the enemy fired his guns. The walls exploded with shot and splinters, tearing apart men and grievously wounding others. The screams, oh how I cannot forget the screams of agony from my Comrades. But soon the order came to fire at will and so we did. Shot after shot into several enemy ships as we doged their shots. After a long while the Formations were shattered and the fight had decended into a confused slugging match. We had raked many ships and even caused one to explode by what I can only assume was a hit on the grand magazine. But we were badly damaged and were low on crew and the captain elected to withdraw from the fight. As we sailed out of the fight we still took many shots and the first mate was even killed by a sharp shooter I heard. After we had gotten a fair distance from the battle, most of us officers and some of the crew went up on deck to watch. There I saw around 75 to 100 dead men laying on the blood soaked deck some were not even of our crew, the Sovereign was missing her mizzenmast and almost all of her larboard guns were destroyed. We could see the mass cloud of smoke and as it was getting darker the flashes of the cannon. The low rumbles continued throughout the night however it had slowed dramatically. In the morning we awoke to the sight of a quiet ocean full of ours and the enemies ships, however all of the enemy ships were flying white flags of surrender and it was then that I knew we had won. The burning hulks of several ships floated on top of the water and bodies littered the Sea. I found later that we, on the Sovereign had 80 killed and 121 wounded and the Sovereign needed repairs badly but we were victorious and I was proud.
