The Battle of Astara Rock
The Battle of Astara Rock was a brutal attack on the people of the Wild Lands by the King's Guard. King Dexter Le Rouge was a very bitter man, prone to holding grudges about just about anything. During an audience, Sir Garrik Blazerider, head of one of the Wild Land clans, asked for aid with an infestation of large rats eating their forage and the few crops they're able to grow causing a shortage.
He made an offhand comment about the slow response to his request and the king flew into a rage. He had Sir Garrik arrested immediately.
When word reached the Wild Lands, people gathered together and staged a protest near Astara Rock calling for his release. Viewing this as a rebellion, the King sent the Guard to disperse everyone even though it was peaceful.
When the people refused to back down, one of the guards fired and chaos ensued. Panicked, unarmed protesters ran from fire and poison gas arrows raining down on them. When the smoke finally cleared next day, and the healers were finally allowed to treat the wounded and take away the dead, the shrine on the Rock was completely destroyed and the surrounding settlements were smoldering. Instead of retaliating with more violence, the survivors returned the next day for a silent protest. This continued for a week.
The king was livid, of course. And, he tried to send the troops in again but they would do nothing more than stand by and make sure nothing else happened.
Eventually the king gave up and Sir Garrik was released. But only after the King forced Parliament, under threat of treason charges, to strip Garrik of his titles and position and push through limits on the rights of Wild Land residents.
