Sage
The Council of Sages was formed on June 8th 559 BFB in response to the growing threat of the Lord of Chaos. They were a group of great warriors and spellcasters hailing from the four kingdoms. They were sent because they were the best of the best, there were none more capable than them to take on the Lord of Chaos. Zysargia shared some of the power of his Soul to the others to enhance their skills slightly, making them more adept at their magic and gaining greater skill at their chosen weapons.
On the point of weapons, each Sage was linked directly to their weapon via their Soul. This essentially made their mastery over the weapon and its use natural, and thus could be passed down through heritage. Each Sage specialised in their own weapon, and did not have anywhere near as great an affinity with any other.

Appointment
A current Sage is able to pass down their power to a member of their kin, commonly a son/daughter, who they deem most worthy. Alternatively, the 'Guardians' will attempt transfer it upon a Sage reaching 45 years old to the Sage's next of kin with the most Sagely power in their soul should the current Sage not have a valid reason to keep their title.
Duties
The Sages would be trusted to protect Adremesis against the far more ethereal threats, the Lord of Chaos for example would not be stopped by conventional infantry. Their duties were mostly lost to history almost immediately after the Sages were disbanded.
History
The Council of Sages were created to defeat the Lord of Chaos. They did so successfully, but not without significant internal strife. After victory, arguments broke out between the Sages about how they should have ended the fight. Zysargia was forced to seal much of their power into gemstones, and to disband the Council.
Cultural Significance
People would generally respect the Sages, though over many, many years the title lost its value. Many squandered their abilities or merely didn't know they had them. The few bloodlines of the Ancient Sages that continued to respect the title was Ironclad's, Falcor's, and Romerulus'. Their descendants, being Ironheart, Mayor Eaglad, and Romulus still took it upon themselves to maintain the title of Sage and to continue its meaning. They were each killed defending that honour.
