Hypersteel
Properties
Material Characteristics
Pale grey-ish blue metal that sparkles ever so slightly under light.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Hypersteel is, as its name suggests, an "upgraded" version of conventional steel. It is slightly denser but considerably more durable while also bearing less thermal conductivity. Its durability did make it notably difficult to work with as it took a lot more effort to mould the metal to the will of the blacksmith. The repulsion of heat makes hypersteel an extremely useful material in insultation; this is extremely useful in the freezing north of Excellion where it was first forged. It requires an additional forging process after steel has been made and can be very difficult to produce so is kept to the expertise of master smithies.
Compounds
Hypersteel is almost entirely made with actual steel but is interlaced with some ice. This ice has been magically altered to not melt and to instead break apart into extremely fine pieces when under extreme heat. This is done by a wizard of some description that will manually work with the ice until it has reached the required state.
Origin & Source
The metal was originally forged by a blacksmith in Excellion in 581 BFB who was experimenting with different way of working with the by-products of steelmaking, namely slag. She discovered that by using chunks of permafrost (which there is plenty of in the Melveil Ice Plains) and treating the slag, it would solidify somewhat and become quite brittle. This was a sign that she was making progress. She tried something similar with proper steel and discovered that it was basically impossible to mix due to the ice melting before much could be done, which is an obvious flaw in her plan. She decided to request someone proficient in magic to protect the ice from melting under the extreme temperatures, and while hesitant, he did what she asked. Using this in the reforging process ultimately came to a very primitive version of hypersteel. It didn't take long for this brand new metal to take off and was perfected after a few more years of working on its production method. This very quickly became a huge part of Excellion's industry and infrastructure due to its insulation abilities. Houses were lined with it, weapons and armour were made from it, and more.
History & Usage
History
Romerulus was friends with a blacksmith and knew the ins-'n'-outs of hypersteel. During their time in the Council of the Sages, both he and Ironclad became good friends and Ironclad was a blacksmith already. Romerulus taught him about the process of producing hypersteel and helped him perfect it. Once Marrarock had been built up and people started settling, Ironclad decided to start working his own hypersteel since Excellion would never share any of their own. It became a well kept secret for many years and Ironclad and his family were the only outsiders to Excellion that knew how to forge it. Over time, it became the staple material of Marrarock as it once did for Excellion.
Distribution
Trade & Market
In modern Adremesis it is the hallmark of Marrarockan smithies and is only produced and sold by them.
Type
Metal
Value
Roughly averages to 1.7x the price of conventional steel for the same weight.
