Oriri - The secret symbol language of the Barohdai

Oriri is the symbol language only known to and used by the Barohdai (a native clan of Rohsk, one of the Four Regions). It consists of symbols created out of wooden twigs and sticks. By binding them together with twine or thin strips of bark, they form symbols. Multiple symbols can be strung together to form a more extensive message, for instance locating the den of a specific type of animal.

Meaning

Oriri is used by the Barohdai clan when travelling in the wild. They will use it to help/warn other Barohdai that might pass later.
Common uses for which a series of Oriri symbols might be left behind are:
  • marking the location of a hidden cache of food/weapons;
  • marking hidden traps;
  • marking the location of an animal’s nest or den;
  • pointing out a safe route (or acting as a signpost
  • marking the location of a hidden resting place, useful when hiding or in need of protection of the elements;
  • warning of dangerous terrain features like quicksand;
  • marking the location of a freshwater source;
  • commemorating a fallen comrade;
  • marking the borders of settlements, both of Barohdai or other clans.
  • Special features

    While one would be right to think that it isn't too hard to decode Oriri, that is not the problem. The problem in understanding the language, for any that are not Barohdai, is finding the Oriri symbols themselves. Even normal twigs could easily blend into the natural terrain of a forest or field. If hidden well enough, you would only be able to detect them if you knew where to look.

    But with Oriri, for the uninitiated finding the symbols becomes extremely hard. This is due to an innate magical ability of the Barohdai. When crafted in the proper way, the Oriri symbols are imbued with a tiny bit of magic, making them very hard to detect. They become nearly invisible and completely blend into the terrain where they are placed. Any that pass could be looking right at them, without even noticing them.

    Only the Barohdai can easily make out the Oriri when they pass them by. For non-Barohdai, this is nearly impossible, except when equipped with a special Barohdai token. Such tokens are only rarely handed out by the Barohdai to outsiders; it is a great honour and sign of trust.
    With the proper spell, one might try to lift the enchantment over nearby symbols. Yet this requires skill and a good deal of luck; the caster would have to be close to the symbols for it to work.

    I love the idea of this language, and I love that it's also hidden by magic which makes it extra secret. :D   It says in the credits the example picture is by you. Did you go out and make those? That's really cool!

    Sadly I didn't make them myself. They were on a trail I hiked on last year (my favorite trail in fact, when we're on holiday in that village). They were still hanging there this year, and they were the perfect inspiration for this SC prompt :-).
