True Dragon
Also known as Greater Dragons or Primordial Drakes, True Dragons are the original and most powerful form of dragonkind. They are distinguished from lesser dragonkin (such as wyverns, drakes, or serpents) by their sentience, innate magical prowess, physical might, and the defining trait of lifelong growth—becoming more powerful, intelligent, and dangerous as they age.
Basic Information
Biological Traits
Lifespan and Growth:
True Dragons grow continuously throughout their lives, progressing through stages: Wyrmling, Juvenile, Adult, Ancient, and occasionally Elder or Ascendant. With each stage, their physical size, magical abilities, and influence increase exponentially.
Innate Magic:
Every True Dragon has access to innate magical abilities tied to their ancestry—ranging from elemental mastery to illusion, enchantment, or time-bending sorcery. They do not study magic—they are magic, shaped by the raw energies of creation.
Breath Weapon:
Each True Dragon possesses a powerful breath weapon—an expression of their elemental or spiritual nature. This breath may be fire, ice, lightning, acid, shadow, pure force, or more exotic forms like starlight or psychic screams.
Wings and Flight:
True Dragons possess powerful wings that allow flight with terrifying speed and agility, despite their massive size. Even in flight, they are often mistaken for meteors, storms, or celestial events.
Hoard Instinct:
A deeply ingrained trait, all True Dragons are driven to amass a hoard. This hoard may consist of gold and gems, magical relics, souls, knowledge, or other objects of significance. The hoard is not merely wealth—it anchors their identity, power, and pride.
Intelligence and Sentience:
True Dragons are hyper-intelligent, often possessing centuries or millennia of knowledge. Many are skilled in strategy, philosophy, politics, and ancient lore. They speak multiple languages and may be natural telepaths or oracles.
Subcategories of True Dragons:
- Chromatic Dragons (Red, Blue, Green, Black, White) – Usually aligned with destruction, chaos, or selfish ambition.
- Metallic Dragons (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Brass, Copper) – Often aligned with protection, wisdom, and balance.
- Elemental Dragons (Fire, Ice, Storm, Earth, etc.) – Embody elemental forces; see detailed category.
- Gem Dragons (Crystal, Amethyst, Sapphire, etc.) – Psionically attuned, philosophical, and mysterious.
- Draconic Anomalies (Shadow Dragons, Void Dragons, Moon Dragons) – Rare variants tied to exotic energies or planes.
Each of these categories still adheres to the True Dragon lifecycle, breath weapon, and magical development.
Ecology and Habitats
A True Dragon’s lair is an extension of its essence—warped and empowered by its presence. Volcanoes, glaciers, crystal caves, storm peaks, deep oceans, planar rifts—each becomes a sanctum reflecting the dragon’s soul and history.
Powerful dragons are often deified or feared as gods, and their deaths can result in ecological collapse, magical disruption, or the rise of undead echoes (like dracoliches or spectral remnants).
Behaviour
True Dragons are individualistic but steeped in ancient customs and hierarchy. While many isolate themselves in remote lairs, others claim dominion over entire regions, forming kingdoms, cults, or empires. Some see mortals as tools, food, or pets—others as allies or disciples.
They are creatures of passion and pride, capable of great mercy or monstrous wrath. Their names hold magical power, and a True Dragon’s true name is often a closely guarded secret.
Civilization and Culture
Common Myths and Legends
True Dragons are woven into the world’s primordial history. Many are said to be descendants of Ur-Dragons, cosmic beings who shaped the elements, skies, or even the flow of time. The death of a True Dragon is a world-shaking event; the awakening of an Ancient one, a harbinger of change.
Some True Dragons even transcend mortality, becoming draconic demigods, eternal guardians, or timeless horrors that dwell outside fate.
