The First Stormcaller

The First Stormcaller is a mythic figure revered among the Windcloaks and mountain clans of the Thunder Peaks. According to legend, he was the first mortal to tame and command the storm, riding atop a giant Skyfang Raptor through the heart of the Everstorm to guide his people to safety. His actions birthed the sacred storm traditions, and his spirit is said to still soar through the heavens, appearing as a shadow within the clouds before great storms.

Historical Basis

Though no written records remain, oral histories speak of a time when an unrelenting storm covered the peaks for seven years. During this age of lightning and chaos, a lone warrior—his name lost to time—emerged wielding a voice that could summon thunder and silence wind. Using his bond with a colossal Skyfang Raptor, he navigated the storm's fury to lead his people from devastation to shelter.

Some arcanists suggest the legend may refer to a pre-Windcloak civilization wiped out by magical weather, with the Stormcaller representing an ancient shaman or weather-mage whose knowledge birthed early stormcraft.

Spread

The legend is told across the Thunder Peaks, the Skyplate Tribes, and even among storm-worshipping seafarers on the coasts. Each region adds its own embellishments:

  • Skyplate Tribes say he commanded twin raptors and sang to the clouds.
  • Stormbinders believe he entered the Eye of the Everstorm and returned wielding the first Storm-Fury Blade.
  • Some claim he was no man, but the Storm made flesh, born of lightning and wind to balance nature’s wrath.

Variations & Mutation

  • In one version, the Stormcaller sacrifices his raptor to stop a deadly tempest, giving rise to the constellation Skyfang’s Fall.
  • Another tale tells of a final storm where the Stormcaller is struck down by a jealous god, yet his soul refused to fall and instead merged with the skies.
  • Some darker tales say the Stormcaller failed, and his return is a harbinger of doom rather than salvation.

Cultural Reception

  • Among the Windcloaks, the Stormcaller is viewed as a founder spirit, invoked in rites of passage, warfare, and stormcraft.
  • In skyburials, whispers are sent to the wind in hopes the Stormcaller will carry the soul to peace.
  • Skyfang Raptors are considered sacred descendants of his steed, and bonding with one is a rare, revered feat.

In Literature

  • The epic poem “Call of the Stormwalker” depicts his journey through the Everstorm in thunderous meter.
  • Children’s fables such as “The Stormcaller and the Rain-Thief” portray him as a trickster hero who steals clouds back from greedy spirits.

In Art

  • Murals in ancient skyshrines show a cloaked warrior with lightning eyes, soaring above jagged peaks on a winged beast.
  • Windcloak totems carved high into mountaintops often bear a silhouetted raptor and rider, always facing east, where the storm begins.
