The Marching Republic
The Evonian Republic has its origins outside the world of Adar. Elves are not native to the material plane. Most believe their hail from the Feywild, decendants of the eladrin. However, elves are scattered across all the far planes. The elves of Adar trace their origins from these inhabitants of the far planes.
The outer planes are sometimes believed by the people of the material plane to be a static place. There each plane is shaped to a virtue, a moral path, or according to some cosmic force. In truth this is an oversimplification. Each plane is as varied and changing as the prime material. Without a barrier to keep them apart travel between the outer planes is achievable by powerful entities, and when these entities meet the result is rarely friendly. Wars are common on the outer planes. Internally on the planes for power in their hierarchies, and between entities of different planes, fighting as their core natures are incompatible.
To fight these wars vast armies are recruited. Mercenary work is popular on the outer planes. Some species like the Giff are entirely composed of mercenaries, their former origins and culture forgotten in the incessant wars on the planes. Without a true home to call their own many elves partook in such work. Dozens of famed sellsword bands existed among the elves.
The Marching Republic was born of the union of fifty six of these mercenary companies. They were all recruited to serve a godling named Cyraxes "the Brightlord" in his bid to place himself as lord of Mount Celestia. They were but one part of a vast army assembled by the ambitious demi-god. The battle went well for the elves, they routed all before them as they fought across the seven peaks of Mount Celestia. However, lord Cyraxes was killed when he engaged The Lord of the Mountain in personal combat.
With this defeat most of Cyraxes' army dissolved into chaos, and was slaughtered or surrendered (to be executed later). The elven companies rallied to the banners of their captain, however, and maintained their cohesion. Pursued by the servants of the Gods they retreated away from the Mountains and towards the portals which had carried them to that plane to begin with.
Pursued by the Gods' men and their allies the elves fled across the planes, seeking a safe harbour. Eventually, after many trials and tribulations they found shelter on the prime material plane, on the world of Adar.
