Mercenary Profession in Actrein | World Anvil

Mercenary

Mercenaries, also commonly known as Bounty Hunters, are the ones whose job revolves around being paid for doing something that someone else doesn't want to do. It's more common for them to join a mercenary guild, of which there are several. These different guilds are distinguished from each other by a hidden pin. Each guild uses a different symbol as their signature pin.

Making a Contract

There is a process for making a contract with a mercenary guild. First and foremost, you have to decide which guild you want to do your job. There are several guilds, each with several members.
The next thing you need to do is find out which taverns belong to that guild. This can be difficult, as there is no official listing. The best way to do this is to ask around, usually in the shadier parts of town.
Once you've located one of their taverns, the next step is to approach a guild member whose job revolves around contract-making. This is an easy task, as you'll be asked upon entering whether you're looking for a contract or a drink. You'll then be guided to the contract-maker.
The contract-maker will ask you questions about the contract you wish to make. These questions include what the job is, who the target is, how much you're willing to pay for the job being completed, and other such questions. Once you've answered these questions, a paper contract will be written. You won't have to do anything after this step, as everything else (aside from payment) will be done by the guild themselves.
The guild will choose a member to send out to fulfill the contract. If the guild member fails or dies, another member is sent out. This continues until either the job is completed, or the guild decides that too many have died and nulls the contract.
Once the job has been completed (with proof of its completion), you will be required to pay the reward for the job. Most of the money goes to the guild, with a portion going to the individual mercenary who completed the job.

Career

Qualifications

Being a mercenary doesn't really require any prior education. Often, new members of the guilds are taught on the job.
However, in order to be a legitimate Mercenary, you have to gain a Mercenary License. Having this allows you to conduct some illegal activities without worrying about government interference.

Perception

Purpose

Technically speaking, they are the ones who do illicit jobs that more official organizations wouldn't do. Assassinations are the most common jobs they're given, though sometimes they are given different jobs.

Social Status

Some see it as a last resort, if they're unable to get into any other jobs. Others see it as being an easy way to get a dirty job done without getting the blood (be that metaphorical or not) on your own hands.

Operations

Tools

Primarily weapons, as most of their jobs require something to either kill or fight back with.

Workplace

Often, the guilds will adopt a handful of taverns as their unofficial headquarters. From the outside, the taverns will appear normal. The inside will, at a glance, also seem normal. However, on closer looks at the patrons of the tavern, a large percentage will have the guild's pins.
While there are no rules against a member of one guild going into the tavern of another guild, often this is something not recommended to do.

Provided Services

The most common services provided are assassinations. However, mercenary guilds have also been known to send out guild members to act out other illegal activities. These often include kidnappings, smuggling, and robberies.
While practicing unofficial religions is also illegal, most mercenaries will not do jobs relating to that, for fear of being executed as a heretic.

Dangers & Hazards

Most of the things they're hired to do carry the risk of death, especially with the assassination jobs.

Demand
For those who want illegal work done without the guilt falling on them, it's a relatively popular measure.
Legality
Demi-legal. If you're doing mercenary work without a Mercenary License, then you're an illegal mercenary. But if you've gone through the process of attaining a legitimate Mercenary License, the government will tend to look the other way.
