Royal Jelly

It's the nourishment you deserve, young one. The goddess Mirri has crafted it specifically for you and your sister to consume, and it will make you greater than all the rest of the hive. It will make you smarter and live longer, if only you would eat!
— A Hive Priestess, trying to feed the young prince Zkirax

History

When the hives were created, the first priestesses were taught by Mirri to make a special concoction that would serve as food for the children slated to be royalty. The honey-nectar was more nutritious, but was imbued with a plant that made it harder for the body to grow and become stronger, slowing the growth of those who ingested the material.

Execution

High Priestesses are accompanied by scouts to go out and obtain a kirin flower, known only to grow within Chenos. They are the only ones to harvest them, since they are seen as holy objects. They then bring them back to the give and hang them to dry, then crush the petals into a fine powder and add it to the honey-nectar mixture. Royalty tend to eat 4-5 times a day, and only eat Royal Jelly. At night, their last meal is one with an added sleep aid.

Components and Tools

High Priestesses wear special gloves when they pick kirin flowers, and also wear them when making the mixture. The toxin can be absorbed through their chitin and is potent in large amounts, so they are sure to take precaution. The flowers are dried over stoked embers to dry them slowly. A specially designated mortar and pestle is used to crush the dried flowers, and feeding is done using clear bowls and spoons. Everything is washed thoroughly after the process is over in a special sink.

Participants & Key Roles

High Priestesses are the ones to prepare the Jelly, though lower priestesses or cooks can deliver the mixture. Scouts help make sure the high priestesses stay safe on their trip through Chenos. The royalty themselves consume the mixture, as it is the only food provided to them, as mandated by Mirri.
