Catal Hisarlik Settlement in Abyssal House | World Anvil

Catal Hisarlik

Catal Hisarlik is the capital city of the Ivory Empire. Originally an Ancient city, it managed to survive the events of Ragnarok relatively intact, though centuries of neglect following the disaster led to the city becoming a ruin. The city became the center of the fledgling Ivory Empire following the appearance of Kovacs Rot and the drawing of the Ashen Blade.   Catal Hisarlik is the site of the Grand Shrine. The Grand Shrine sits on the entrance to the Dragon's Crypt, the resting place of a dragon attempting to escape Ragnarok.

History

Catal Hisarlik was founded sometime during the Age of Ancients, though its exact founding date has been lost to history. Many of the buildings in the city are monumental, but their exact purpose is unknown.   The city was not spared the effects of Ragnarok at the end of the Age of Ancients. The citizens abandoned the city, though there were no physical signs of destruction. The only real damage came during the dragon's attempt to dig through the ground to the Abyss. Part of the city center was entirely destroyed, and that area of the city is still lower than the rest of the city. The Grand Shrine had been built over the entrance to the Dragon's Crypt.   Following the events of Ragnarok, the city sat abandoned, and the effects of the curse eminating from the Dragon's Crypt caused most Freestaters to avoid the area. The only people who braved the curse to live in the city were refugees from the clans around the city hoping to avoid the constant warring. These early residents suffered the effects of the curse and died in short order.   The Ashen Blade appeared at the entrance to the Dragon's Crypt one day. How the blade appeared and the exact date of its appearance are unknown, as the area was lightly populated and few records kept.    The year 3144 BV marked a change in the city's prosperity. Kovacs Rot appeared in this year and drew the Ashen Blade. With the Imperial Shrine Maiden at his side, he gathered the residents of the city and managed to unite the other clans into what would become the Ivory Empire. He was assassinated by his sister Nobares during his coronation in 3142 BV.    The city remained the cultural and political capital of the Ivory Empire.
