Loukag Vaitho

Loukag Vaitho (a.k.a. Runebreaker)

Loukag ‘Runebreaker’ Vaitho is the undershaman for the Sky Pony Tribe of the Sammaria Mountains in the Northlands of Fjoll. He has lived for twenty-one years, studying elemental philosophy under the tribe’s shaman, Nararhan ‘Stormstopper’ Anakalimino. Loukag's first nickname was “Pathfire”, granted to him when he mastered a bit of fire magic at a young age and provided illumination for treacherous passage in darkness. At the age of eight, he earned a new nickname, “Wolfkiller”, after wielding a magic spike of ice to kill a wolf on a hunt. At 13, Loukag received the much-respected moniker “Chiefshield” when he magically softened the chief's fall from a dislodged face of ice, saving her life. After he held that ceremonial title for the year that was customary, Loukag earned a new one, “Spireclimber,” when he used his “magic fingers” to conquer a well-known crag of mountain previously regarded as impossible to ascend. His second-most recent nickname, “Bonfire,” is a reference to a night when two hungry Yetis set upon their camp. In response, Loukag unleashed the magic straight from the tribal bonfire to incinerate the Yetis. Loukag’s role to the tribe is multifaceted, but his skills are most often employed in protection, traversing dangerous terrain, concealing their position from dangerous entities, and spiritual consultation.
Only two weeks ago, the hated Bloodtusk Clan of Orcs ambushed the Sky Pony tribe as it was moving out of the mountains for a visit to One Stone. Grat Bloodtusk, a warlock of Gruumsh, led the attack. Because of a generations-long feud between these clans, Grat and Stormstopper were bitter enemies. This night, Grat killed Stormstopper and took his spellbook, 77 Maps of the Elemental Harmony. Loukag tried to protect his teacher, but he also fell to Grat, who threw Loukag from a cliff before turning to raid Sky Pony’s supplies. Sky Pony’s warriors were routed, and they retreated down the mountains, recovering a battered Loukag on the way. They fled into nearby Dwarven Ruins that Sky Pony had occasionally used for shelter during terrible storms.
The Bloodtusks gave pursuit, and Sky Pony found themselves trapped, the only way out was a magically sealed door that had perplexed the clan’s delvers many times before. In a panic, Loukag attempted a bit of wizardry he had never studied, pulling at invisible strands of the weave which he had only recently learned to perceive. With that, Loukag melted the rune on the long-sealed door, gaining access to deeper corridors. That impromptu bit of magic saved the survivors, and afterwards they gave a new nickname to Loukag: Runebreaker.
With his clanmates, Runebreaker began to plot revenge against the Bloodtusks. But a dream of terrible power communicated another idea to him. He saw himself at a mountain peak, gazing down at a vast landscape of storms, fires, collapsing hills and sinkholes. Over the chaos, pages of the 77 Maps danced in the wind, flowing across the landscape, some of them disintegrating as they flew away. He heard a voice from Savras, the Unblinking:
“The book, like your master, is doomed. But Stormstopper writ a second, and he scattered those pages to the wide world below. You may only rewrite it from your own steps. Go from the mountains, into the chaos. With clear eyes, uproot the charts from their natural faces, draw their intelligence from the air and the stones. Only armed with your own tome may you avenge this travesty.”
The dream concluded by showing Runebreaker a path down the mountains, over the southern plains, to a forest kingdom. Convinced by the holy clarity of the dream, Loukag said his farewells to his tribemates, bidding them to seek shelter within the hidden Dwarven halls, until he can return to help them properly avenge Stormstopper's fate.
