Shorkin

The Shorkin or Shatterclaw as many call them, are very succesful ambush predators which live in small pocket dimensions from which they strike their prey. They tend to live in the more remote parts of the world, although there were instances where they were spotted near civilisation.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Its skin is very thin, leathery and very colourful. It has no mouth or visible eyes or ears. It has three long appendages tipped with long serrated claws which it uses to grapple prey.

Genetics and Reproduction

They do not reproduce on their own, but can spawn as an echo from a nearby teleportation, planar shift or high intensity telepathic communication. If there is enough magical energy in the vicinity of their spawn location, they manifest into a grown specimen.

Ecology and Habitats

They almost never leave their pocket dimension, therefore they can be found in any climate, although they do prefer colder temperatures. When they cross over to this reality they cause a shatter in extradimensional walls which can be heard by creatures that are telepathically inclined.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Due to its ambush tactics it uses large amounts of magical energy. While it can feed on any living organism, extracting their life and magical energy, it does prefer to prey on creatures with high magical potency. If there is a food shortage in the area it goes into a sort of hibernation in which time in the pocket dimension slows down enough to let it survive until its next meal.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They possess a sensory node which allows them to feel prey through dimensions.

Civilization and Culture

History

They were first discovered when a portal hub was established in the 2nd Aureian empire. The conditions there were perfect for Shortkin spawn to manifest into adults. Consequently killing 12 people and leaving 7 to suffer from severe brain damage. This is known as the Fall of Doors massacre. From then on, larger teleportation hubs employ dedicated mages called scrubbers which destroy any spawn that would appear in the area.
