Electromagnetic haze

The skies of Aaltiera are a featureless and dull grey, broken only by the arcing of red lightning across the haze.

The dense electromagnetic haze covering the planet obscures and diffuses the harsh sunlight of the system's star across the sunward hemisphere. The thick cloud banks serve to reflect and scatter all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, disrupting even the strongest coherent beam of light and reducing even the most intelligible signal to meaningless static.
An odd quirk of the haze acts to confine packets of plasma for far longer before dissipating than is otherwise possible, making plasma weaponry actually practical.
