The clans of the Western Holds domesticated and bred a special type of falcon for use as a messenger across their vast mountainous dominion. Through generations of selective breeding, these falcons developed unique capabilities.
This messenger falcon is known as the Farwing Falcon. It possesses great stamina, allowing it to fly 50-100 miles in a single trip across the rugged terrain. Its large wingspan makes it very agile and able to ride updrafts and high winds that form along the mountain cliffs.
The Farwing Falcon's most prized attribute is its keen homing ability. Each bird is bred in and bonded to a specific roost in one of the major holdfasts. A special leather pouch is attached to its legs to carry small written messages. Using the sun as guidance and its instinctive inner mapping, a Farwing can return to its home roost from anywhere in the dominion.

How the system works

Upon arrival, the recipient detaches the message and replaces it with a reply scroll if needed. The falcon then returns to its home roost. Some maintain relay stations with fresh birds to significantly quicken transit times.
This messenger falcon network allows the clans to coordinate defenses, trade news, and issue orders with speed. It binds together the dominion despite the inhospitable landscape. The Farwing Falcons have become a symbol of the region's ingenuity and rugged spirit.
