Extreme conditions lead to rapid genetic divergence between populations.

In the nuclear aftermath, few species proved strong enough to survive. Brutal evolutionary pressures, isolated gene pools and high levels of radiation exposure all contributed to an accelerated rate of evolutionary development. This divided mankind into multiple subspecies, each with their own discernible traits.   The flora and fauna also adapted to their new environment and is now almost as diverse as the Old World.
