Saltskin

It may look a bit strange but it could be worse. Rather Saltskin than a failing bladder.
— Amari Celdran, Duchess of Wertan
Ageing is inevitable. Every man and woman is subject to the constant onslaught of time. There are a variety of ailments that can befall one during this process from the weakening of one's bones to losing control of one's body. Among those born in Illigara, there is another, somewhat odd (at least to the Vardanians) condition.

White Arms

It usually begins once one passes the age of 50. While earlier cases are known, they are very rare. The skin on the arms and legs will begin to dry out. Over a few years, it will continue to do so until the skin reaches a leather-like texture. Sweat will no longer emerge from the skin in those areas.   After a further while, the skin will begin to turn white until it reaches the colour of salt. The result is stretches of the arms and legs looking like the surface of saline lakes. It is completely harm- and painless and a common sight among the elderly populace of western communities.   There have been attempts to surgically remove the affected skin. However, this will simply result in a new layer of Saltskin to grow. While it is generally an accepted fact, some parts of the noble classes see it as an impurity and either hide it under a cloth or routinely undergo operations to cut the "impurity" out.
