Insula
What to do once space for new people runs out? Feran cities spread far and wide like fungal growth. Vardanian cities however grasp at the skies.Large cuboids made of concrete. Certainly not beautiful or elegant in any way. But this is the Vardanian way. Think pratical, beauty can come later. When it comes to housing tens of thousands of people, they would rather errect a few thousand concrete blocks than let their cities spread uncontrollably across the land. As a result Vardanian cities are often smaller in size then Feran ones with a similar population.
Construction
A standard Insula is 30 meters high, however variants of 20 meters are quite common. One usually holds 7 to 11 apartments with a total of 1012 sq meters. Apartments on the bottom floors are larger and more "luxurious" than those at the top. Because of safety issues and extra flights of stairs, the uppermost floors are the least desirable, and thus the cheapest to rent. Some Insulae include room for small and mid sized buisnesses on the ground floor and first floor. From bakeries to post offices and smiths, there is nothing you wont find here. In some cases city administrations have moved their offices into these buildings. The city of Tarquinnia alone is said to contain over 65.000 Insulae.Hundreds upon hundreds of people, squashed together on minimal space. How wonderful. A single forgotten fire and you have the worlds biggest coffin.
A model of a smaller Insula. Models like these are usually used by builders to plan renovations and changes.

I would rather live in Feran cities than a giant ugly block in Vardania.
