Makarans

The Makarans are perhaps the most infamous organization on Prostesa. Majorly responsible for Ustenstead’s Titan Siege and the creation of the Tarrasque, they have terrorized the people of Bethalon for ages. When the Echo Disaster swept over Prostesa, however, their influence has been gradually weakening. Currently, the Makarans are on a decline and slowly fading into obscurity for better or worse. 
The Makarans are essentially a mafia family, operating in select areas not just in Bethalon but all across Prostesa. Their origin is unknown as are their motives, but they seem to care not for money.   The Makarans were the ones that created the monstrosity known as the Metasurp, a humanoid that, instead of being overtaken by the illithid tadpole, merged with it and dominated its mind, enacting a transformation. It’s unknown how exactly this was done, but the results are all that matter. These metasurps now fill the streets, reminding Bethalon of the trauma it was put through.

The one thing that was known to all however is that clients who failed to repay their debts to the Makarans were labeled as “PL-Clients”. The ‘PL’, meaning ‘potential’, meant that should this person be captured by the Makarans, their fate was to be used in the experimentation that led to the creation of the Metasurps. It’s believed that the Makarans were harboring illithid tadpoles that had been unaccounted for after the invasion by preserving them via magical methods, though nobody is sure how exactly the Makarans could’ve predicted that their experiments would lead them to this.
To this day, absolutely no Makarans have been uncovered, a piece of knowledge that has kept the entire city of Bethalon in fear.
