Echo Scouter Profession in A Quiet Realm - Prostesa | World Anvil

Echo Scouter

Perhaps one of the most overlooked careers is the echo scouter, one that specializes in intelligence-gathering and damage control. Most Echo Scouters aren’t enlisted by the government and instead come from Crestclaw clans as a countermeasure to the Echo Disaster.   The job of an echo scouter is relatively simple: find traces of echoes and send out warnings to protect the defenseless. This task tends to be overlooked because they are not expected to fight the echoes even if they have the means to do so. To an echo hunter, there are countless other echoes across Aohiri, and they cannot waste time personally handling each echo they come across.

Career

Qualifications

Unless the echo scouter works for a particular government, they have no qualifications. Crestclaw clans are often seen as glorified mercenaries who go where they please and handle missions however they desire. Governments will occasionally have their own echo scouters instead of hiring crestclaw members to establish a better sense of loyalty and trust.   Government-appointed scouters are eligible so long as they are currently serving or have served in the military. They must also be capable of casting magic—meaning dili scouters are not often government-appointed—and they must have sufficient evidence of having studied magic for at least two years. Most settlements have institutions that teach magic, so documents from these institutions qualify as evidence.

Perception

Purpose

Echo scouters are a major reason why the Echo Disaster has not reduced Prostesa’s major cities to rubble. Though their role in society is incredibly important, there is an unspoken agreement to never publically announce oneself as an echo scouter. The only reason for doing this, however, is so they can perform their jobs free of distractions. The more echo scouters are out of sight and in the background, the better their quality of work.
