Balgrendian Army

In the rugged terrain of Balgrendia, where natural barriers already provide formidable defense, King Frederick has established a standing army, financed through a system of taxation that cascades from the nobility to the peasantry. The army is structured for agility and responsiveness, segmented into small units, each directed by a field marshal. These commanders hold equal status within the military hierarchy, ensuring a flat and responsive chain of command.   King Frederick insists on unwavering preparedness despite the kingdom's secure position and the scarcity of external threats. This readiness is maintained through relentless training, keeping the forces sharp and cohesive. Balgrendia’s military is optimized for its terrain, composed predominantly of infantry. The marshlands and forests render cavalry impractical, so the foot soldiers, armed with long-reaching polearms and spears for initial engagement, resort to short swords for close combat when necessary. Balgrendian steel's renowned quality ensures that their blades remain keen, and their spears, fashioned from sturdy, tempered wood, are robust and lethal.   Archers form a significant portion of the army, with almost half the soldiers skilled in ranged combat. Mounted units are reserved for command roles, with horseback officers coordinating rather than clashing directly with the enemy. However, an elite cavalry unit under Field Marshal Stauffer stands as an exception. These adept riders wield light, serrated swords and excel in rapid, tactical strikes, often lying in wait to ambush and flank worn-out foes.   In stark contrast to The Borderguard's inexperienced conscripts, the Balgrendian army is a professional and voluntary force, with soldiers eager to serve. Though actual combat is rare for them, their discipline and superior training keep them battle-ready. The military offers a higher standard of living compared to the peasantry, making it an attractive avenue for those seeking to improve their social standing. It’s not uncommon for families to invest in ensuring their kin's enlistment, viewing service in the army as a preferable alternative to the perilous duties of the Borderguard.
