Complete Mana Shutdown
Pandunamostasis
Also known as CMS, Complete Mana Cessation, or CMC, and medically called Pandunamostasis, CMS is a form of Mana Cessation so severe and with such a different treatment plan that it is often considered a separate type of condition. A type of Dunamopausal (Mana Inhibiting) Condition, it is characterised by the complete shutdown of the Mana System and the degradation and dispersal of Mana within it. Additionally, CMS causes much more severe physical symptoms than Mana Cessation, as well as neurological and psychological symptoms that are otherwise absent from Mana Cessation.
CMS is sometimes confused with Pandunamilysis (Complete Mana Breakdown) due to the similarity of the symptoms that both conditions present. However, CMS is different from CMB in that it does not dispel the Mana System in its entirety, instead simply "turning it off" while leaving it present within the Dunamic Body (Autodunamicus). The length of time that CMS lasts can vary dramatically based on the circumstances of it initially occurring. Some report that their CMS resolved within days, while others suffered for months, up to a year, before they were fully healed.
CMS is rare, and is a severe and traumatic response to external stimuli or to another condition causing an extreme response in the Mana System's safeguards. Such responses can be fatal if not monitored and treated properly, particularly amongst the innately magical.
Causes
As with Mana Cessation, CMS typically has two external causes; external influence that disrupts the normal Mana flow within the System, or an internal safeguard of the Mana System triggering a rapid reflex response. However, in cases of CMS, these causes are generally more severe or violent in nature, and rapid reflex responses are extreme.
CMS can also be caused by an overactive Mana System safeguard, often as a result of Dunamic Autoimmune Disorders. These cause CMS to trigger in the event of minor conditions that would normally be resolved through other responses, such as Mana Cessation or even as simple as Mana Hiccups.
Symptoms
The most obvious symptom for CMS is the failure in the operation of the Mana System and the lack of the flow of Mana through said system, in a similar manner to Vesical or Postvesical Mana Cessation. However, this is often accompanied by severe headaches or migraines, violent nausea, a burning sensation under the skin as though the veins are on fire, and a severe sense of disconnect or disorientation.
Additionally, CMS brings with it a variety of neurological and psychological symptoms, particularly among those with innate magic. These symptoms include hallucinations, mood swings, depression, vertigo, cognitive decline, numbness, full or partial paralysis, loss of appetite, changes in sleep patterns, and disassociation.
Treatment
While Mana Cessation is often allowed to resolve itself or treated with Dunamigenic potions, attempting to force Dunamigenesis can result in further damage to the Mana System, while simply leaving it with no intervention can even lead to death.
For this reason, CMS is most often treated by inducing a state of sleep (a medically induced coma) within the patient and introducing them to an environment filled with pre-purified Mana. The sleeping state prevents them from experiencing the worst of the traumas associated with CMS, and inhibits their ability to harm themselves should they enter disassociative or hallucinative states. The pre-purified Mana environment places the Dunamic Body in a situation where it can be gently stimulated by Mana, rather than the harsher impacts of raw Mana or the forceful nature of Dunamigenic potions. This allows the Dunamic Body to reform in a manner similar to when it first forms during pregnancy, and is protected by the Mother's body filtering raw Mana for the foetus.
These periods of sleep typically only last for a few days at a time, as leaving an individual in a pure Mana environment for too long can lead to pure Mana dependencies and addictions.
Prognosis
If left unchecked and untreated, CMS can be extremely traumatic and even lead to death in the innately magical. However, so long as patients are carefully monitored and cared for, a full recovery can be made.
Sequela
Recovery times for CMS can vary greatly, and some may find it more traumatic than others. Elves and Dhaoinesìth are prone to episodes of Sensory Overload after sleeping treatments, and some lingering psychological effects of the loss of spellcasting can remain for years after a severe episode. These can include nightmares, substance abuse, anxiety paralysis, or even psychosis.
