Heynland

Located in the South West corner of Útgarðar is the island kingdom of Heynland. It is a merchant and raiding kingdom with easy access to the North Sea and Sea of Winters. The land is divided into three jarldoms each ruled by a elected jarl. The kingdom in its entirety is run by the Althing, a kind of parliament made up of land owners and mayors.

The environment is warmer than elsewhere due to its southern latitude but still cold due to be surrounded by water. The norther area is forested and has three main fjords while the south is mountainous. The three major ports of Heynland are Horgg in the North West which acts as the capital, Hushar on the North Eastern section of the island, and Reykjaa in the South West.

Most of the money and resources in Heynland are imported and traded for due to the island having poor natural resources. They make most of their money from trading and raiding. Their most common targets are the island nation of Saksland and the continental nation of Frakkland. The merchants of Heynland then sell those good to the rest of Útgarðar. The merchants of Heynland are known as some of the shrewdest and cleverest in all of the North.

They primarily export treasure gained from raids and import metals and other things from elsewhere. Their most notable trading partners are Viddleland, Marsir Eyjariki, and Hammerdeep. They maintain good relations with all of them but are a tad envious of Marsir Eyjariki's mainland holdings. The land beneath Heynland is dangerous and full of untamed land and monsters.

The military of Heynland is primarily made up of mercenaries trained either in raiding or imported from Viddleland. Fenresian mercenaries are in high demand by the jarls due to their skill and ferocity in combat. Their general lack of survival instinct makes them great shock troops. With all the money Heynland has they can afford to fight mercenary wars.

With all the money that they have amassed through trade Heynland is the richest nation in Útgarðar. Followed by Viddleland and then Araqar. All this money is used for the military as shown above and large displays of wealth. Most notably the jarls have a tendency to build a new palace every 4-5 years and give the old one to a favored subordinate. This means that Heynland has the most amount of mead halls and long houses of any kingdom in Útgarðar.

All this flamboyance has a downside however. The amount of crime in Heynland is greater than most kingdoms. Thieves guilds and bandits are frequent sights. This means that the towns and jars hire more mercenaries, this causes other problems. The mercenaries have a tendency to be corrupt and extortionist no better than the bandits. In fact if they aren't paid they tend to become bandits. This is not even considering corrupt mayors and town leaders. In all Heynland is a rich but crime ridden ready for someone to clean it up. At least for a time.

"Eh I don't really like this one. Sure I admire them working from a disadvantaged position. But all the mercenaries and merchantmen are a bit much. Can't they fight their own wars?"
