Kindleseed Festival

The stirring of soil and fire"

Celebrated: At the first thaw of the Thawroot Season
The symbolic awakening of nature and the world-forge — a day of union between craft, nature, and community.

The First Thaw Bell Rings

Kindleseeds are crafted - During the Frostpeak, large coals are soaked in fertilizer, and seeds are set inside the coals. These coals are then carefully carved and painted to express personal goals and wishes for the new year.   At the beginning of Thawroot, a large carved icicle is suspended above a tuned metal plate. When the first droplet of meltwater falls and strikes the center of the plate, a clear, resonant tone rings out across the town.   This tone marks the first thaw of Thawroot — and with it, the beginning of the Festival!   After the ringing of the metal plate, people rush to get the forges cleaned, and garden plots and paths are cleared of snow.

I: The Kindleseed Awakening

Kindleseeds — coals beautifully carved, painted, and inlaid with seeds — are carried to the prepared soil plots. Each kindleseed is planted into the thawing soil, symbolizing the union of craft and nature.
The soil is then sprinkled with fertilizer and ashes.

II: The Draw of Breath

All doors and windows are opened — a symbolic inhale, inviting the fresh breath of a new season into the halls.   The community then gathers around the central forge, where fresh coals and more kindleseeds are placed, and the first bellow is blown — a symbolic exhale and connection between nature and the world-forge.   From this central forge, embers are carried in small ember-lanterns to homes and other forges. A chain of fire-lightings spread, marking the communal connection to each other and to the world-forge.
