Waystone
A naturally ocurring navigational material.
Waystones (sometimes known as lodestones in other regions of Melior) are naturally magnetic rocks that form from where powerful lightning strikes touch the ground and can be dug up from the surface layers of the world.
Waystones aren’t common and it’s unlikely that you would find one on a beach due to the crashing waves shifting everything around so much that it becomes nearly impossible to spot one. It's good luck to find a small one by chance - the larger ones are usually buried and are only uncovered when land is prepared for construction or when farmers plow their fields.
Wealthy craftsfolk in Jolundria use tiny waystones for magnetic claspings for fine adornments, clothing, and even bespoke hand-carved wooden boxes with magnetic closings for the lid.
Navigation
Their purpose and function is crucial to the seafaring and navigating folk of Melior. Waystones are used in small quantities within navigational devices to “always point the way”, as they can direct a compass to always point towards the Aurus - the ice cold heart of The Jolundrian Empire.Decoration
The waystones are dark and have a metallic sheen to them which makes them desirable as ornaments and jewelry. A leather wrapped waystone pendant is often presented as a meaningful birthday gift among the Nurbotu Scarfolk as it symbolises never being lost and always knowing that you have a welcoming home waiting for you. It’s a common symbol attached to the phrase “home is where the heart is”, as the pendant is always low enough to rest just above the heart.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild

I love the concept of the waystones, and I like they are used in compasses. :D
