bad but good Condition in Lens | World Anvil

bad but good

Jinetta Humara is a retired scientist who worked at the Puurtan Observatory for over thirty years. She was part of a team assigned to testing different lenses on a variety of Constellations. Jinetta also has a rare condition in which her body produces very low levels of keratin. This means she is unable to grow any hair on her head or body, and her toenails and fingenails are extremely thin and brittle. This condition, which she had grown to live with over the years, turned out to have an unexpected benefit, discovered when an experiment her team was working on went very wrong.   The experiment released a large burst of potent Constellation light, which had been filtered through several lenses to alter it wavelength. At first it seemed as though everything was fine and they continued on with their experiment, however, one by one, the members of the team soon began to experience symptoms of Constellation Sickness, dizziness, extreme thirst, coughing up blood. Jinetta was the only one to not experience any effects other than a headache and a little nausea. She was therefore able to raise the alrm and begin to administer the emergency solution they had for such emergencies. Her quick actions saved most of her team, with only one of the six succumbing to the poison and dying shortly after.   Being a scientist, Jinetta was curious as to why she hadn't experienced symptoms half as bad as the rest of her team, and sought the help of a friend who was a biologist. Together they ran a series of experiments to see if it had just been a coincidence the first time, and maybe she just hadn't been hit as much as the rest of her team. it turned out that jinetta was able to withstand over three time more exposure than the average person, before beginning to get sick. She could also withstand exposure for longer periods of time. It was as if her body had some sort of natural immunity to the radiation given off by the Constellation.   The only difference of any significance that they could find between Jinetta and the rest of her crew was her keratin deficiency. But they as yet been unable to discover precisely what it is about her condition that gives her this strange resistance. They were lucky enough to find two other people with the condition who were willing to undergo less vigorous tests than Jinetta had put herself through, and they aslo demonstrated a resistance to the radiation.
