Laws of Ósa

There are many laws that govern the world; some are decided by the Immortals, others by the senate, and others still by the individual rulers of the many federal cities in in Ósa.      

Republic Laws

The Law of Xenia is absolute - if a stranger requests a bed and board one must be a gracious host, lest you risk being rude to a God in disguise. Refusing a guest in need without good reason carries the punishment of a fine, the exact amount widely variable across Ósa. Being a poor guest or poor host can have penalties dependant on what was done, often to be decided by the nearest authority.   Killing a guest while you are hosting them, or killing a host while you are their guest, carries the death penalty, for fear of alerting the Furies if such an act is not punished swiftly and decisively.   Patricide and Matricide both carry the death penalty, for fear of alerting the Furies if such an act is not punished swiftly and decisively.   Murder of a Plebian is punishable by a 1 gold fine paid to the family of the deceased*.   Murder of an Aposýros, Klirikós, or Várdos is punishable by a 10 gold fine paid to the family of the deceased*.   Murder of a Mágos or Ágios is punishable by death for anyone of lower class, and banishment for anyone of equal or greater class*.   Murder of a Senator or Consul carries the death penalty*.   Worship of heretical gods is punishable by fine, whipping, banishment, or death depending on the God, and to be decided by each region.
  • Those worshipping Gods unique to their race may be exempt.
  • Worship of "The Planeswalker" is punishable by banishment at a minimum.
Worship of The Breaker, or collusion with his creations, is punishable by whipping.   Impersonating a Mágos or person of equivalent or greater class is punishable by death.   Using magic without being a licensed Mágos or Ágios is punishable by death. Though the accused must be granted the option of finding a master and paying 5g for a spell focus first.   If a fine cannot be paid by the accused, they fall into indentured servitude to the victim or their family until the debt is paid off.   Theft is punishable by fine equal to the worth of items stolen*, to be paid to the victim.   Assault is punishable by fine paid to the victim*, the amount to be decided by the nearest authority.      

Teráka

Assault outside of Chyreum or Idalos is punishable by whipping*.   Assault within Chyreum or Idalos is punishable by time spent as an arena slave*, the duration of which is to be decided by the nearest authority.   Theft, fraud, or destruction of property is punishable by fine equal to twice the value of items lost, to be paid to the victim.   If a fine cannot be paid by the accused, they fall into either indentured servitude or must spend the time as an arena slave.   Murder additionally carries the punishment of indentured servitude to the family of the deceased for one year*. If the deceased has no kin, the time must be spent as an arena slave in Chyreum instead.   Conspiring with monsters from the shifting Isle is punishable by banishment.

Bold: Immutable - True laws of The Republic or a region, that apply everwhere inside its borders and cannot be changed by internal members of the Federation outside of extreme circumstances.   Italics: Mutable - can be modified by constituent cities or regions, whether to become more or less severe.   Underline: Minimum punishment - individual cities and regions can treat criminals as severely as they see fit if they do not believe the minimum punishment is enough.   Asterisk *: Assembly privilege - a mágos (or equivalent) may be exempt from certain laws, so long as their reasons for breaking the law are justified.
