Scope
The motivation behind building صحراء الموت اللانهائي
This world is built to explore the rich lore and mysticism inspired by Ancient Egyptian Culture contained within a plane of existence that creates a narrative of terror and suspense.
The goal of the project
I hope to use this setting as a place to create stories and adventures within, filled with a vertible cast of complex characters, all whom have their own personal agendas and morals that will create impacts on each new story that is told.
صحراء الموت اللانهائي's Unique Selling point
My world is meant to explore an ancient civilization wrought with unspeakable acts of inhumanity, faced with countless life or death choices that will ultimately have a cause and effect on the development of the setting. Inspired by the vast lore of Ancient Egypt and combined with inspiration from popular fantasy fiction; my world will grow with each new narrative between players and Dungeon Masters.
Theme
Genre
The genre of my setting is a combination of Dark Fantasy and Disaster Horror. Technology has managed to advance into the Bronze Age through a combination of inovation and the Arcanistic Arts. Due to the presence of the Divine; influences of the Dark Lord; and the Dark Powers that Be, the level of Magic within this setting can be considered High but also unpredictable.
Reader Experience
My setting should feel both exciting as it is dangerous; where an accursed death could be around nearly every turn, but the rewards of overcoming such insurmountable odds and achieiving great deeds of renown are worth the incredible risk. This setting is meant to be harsh, from the natural forces prevalent throughout brought by the Dark Powers that be, to the increasing strength of transformed malevolent fauna that plague the ever shifting sands of the vast desert. Players should feel a sense of dread and awe as they discover clues to a long forgotten history while they continue to shape the future with their actions.
Reader Tone
This setting is within the Domains of Dread; formally the Demi-plane of Dread. The domain itself is both a prison and a safe-haven for the Dark Lord; and the setting bends around his will as the Dark Powers see fit. The Domain itself can be inhospitable when faced with aggressive natural forces, and many of the inhabitants struggle to not only survive, but prove they are deserving of a peaceful afterlife; instead of a accursed existence after death.
Recurring Themes
I. An inescapable dread at being suddenly misplaced.
II. Dark threats consistently loom just beyond the peripheral of trusted senses.
III. A vast Labyrinth of ancient ruins buried beneath the endless shifting sands; filled with riches beyond even the greediest wildest dreams, but protected by deadly traps and deadlier encounters.
IV: Political Betrayal and backroom schemes that will either further nefarious agendas or bring the tainted evil into the light.
V: An endless cycle of Death and Rebirth. A curse that every individual carries, ensuring they will know no peace in death, and instead rise to consume the souls of the living with a hunger that can never be sated. But for every death, a birth is guaranteed to replace it in order to maintain the balance within the domain, possibly influenced by the Dark Powers that be.
Character Agency
I want this setting to evolve naturally with each new adventure that takes place within it; no matter how small or how short. Every interaction each Player Character has should feel like it could have a domino effect; with many choices resulting in consquences and benefits. This is a dark campaign, so players would understand that any change they bring on the would may not have an ultimately desirable result.
Focus
Religious Influence: The Polytheistic Pantheon of this setting is not what it appears to be. The revered Divine walk amonst the Mortal Races, their influence is felt far and wide and their is little to no question as to the divinity of such Avatars. Yet there is still a seed of doubt that is growing, the dissent of those who feel a need to question the religious teachings handed down to them; and the fragments of a forgotten history long since buried under the shifting sands may go as far to prove or disprove the Divine.
History: For more than a Millenia, the Mortal Races have been taught their own History by the Divine and the religious orders that worship them; but have done little to record or perserve their History for themselves. Their is no reason to believe that the History they have been taught could be anything but the truth; but scattered throughout the vast endless sea of shifting sands, dormant temples lie dedicated to long forgotten Pharaoh's of an ancient civilation.
Curse: Everyone and everything sapient within this setting is afflicted with a curse, regardless of whether they were born here, misplaced, or venture from other Domains. The curse only takes effect twenty-four hours after death; when the corpse is reanimated and driven by a singular purpose; the consumption and death of the living. The belief that the curse only affects those who die unworthy of eternal peace after death, is taught by the Divine and their religious orders; and as a result, individuals within this setting strive to prove their worthiness all of their life by upholding the ideals taught by the Divine.
