This unusual fruit from Dassnia has also become very popular in areas East Sylvania, including Dusk Bloom Lands and some parts of the Central Faerie Empire. It's unusual shape, sweet flavour, and striking bioluminescence have made it very distinctive.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The D’oae plant is quite unusual. It looks similar to a cattail, with the fruit growing on thin stalks that sprout up amongst clumps of long, verdant leaves. The fruits themselves are quite small, only reaching around 5 centimeters long and 7 to 9 ounces in weight. They grow wrapped in a translucent, papery husk that is yellow-green in colour. Within this husk grows a small, blue-green bioluminescent fruit.

The fruit of the D’oae has a juicy texture and a savoury flavour. The distinctive blue D’oae juice retains its bioluminescence after cooking and is a popular ingredient in many Dassnian sauces.

The D’oae fruit has a single large pit in the centre, which is golden in colour. The pit and the husk are both inedible. D’oae stalks, however, are often harvested, dried, and ground into a fine powder called “D’oae Bark”. It has a spicy flavour that works well in both sweet and savoury dishes.
D’oae flowers are incredibly small, and are usually white or pale green. They are used for hair decoration and perfume making, as they have a pleasant scent
Wild and domestic D’oae plants don’t have many differences, with the domesticated varieties typically being a few grams heavier than the wild ones.

Ecology and Habitats

D’oae plants prefer a cool, wet climate, which makes them ideal for growing in West Sylvania and the northern islands of Dassnia. Wild D’oae Fruit can often be found growing on the banks of ponds and streams throughout Dassnia.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

D’oae fruit and ‘bark’ are both harvested for food, and the flowers are used in traditional perfume making. Additionally, the husks and pits can be dried and used to make decorations and toys.

While the food aspects of D’oae haven’t caught on much outside of Dassnia and West Sylvania (something about the food glowing? Imperials are so weird.), the perfumes and decorations have been popular throughout Faerie for several millennia.

The recent discovery that D’oae juice can be used to make glowing paint has brought this strange marsh plant to centre stage in recent years. And while it hasn’t caught on as a food item yet, it's only a matter of time.
