Splitting Seas Civil War

A civil war between two factions of Faran Iqueia. One side, who favored a stable monarchy and the other who favored the traditional system of tanistry succession.

The Conflict

Prelude

The former High Laird died abruptly, only a few years into their reign. As the death was unexpected, the Lairds of Faran Iqueia had little inclination of who or how to select the next High Laird. The idea to hold a series of competitions was decided upon. During these games, the young Laird Valrieth Iarrona of Clan [CLANNAME] was victorious.   Laird Iarrona was recognized by the patron of the Isles, [INSERT PATRON NAME]. In being recognized, their term as High Laird began and could not be ended by anything short of death.   However, the title was not given willingly. Under the daughter of the former High Laird, she and her allied clans pledged to a separate entity, becoming known as the 'Monarchists' faction. These Monarchists declared war on the clans allied with High Laird Iarrona as well as the Isle's patron who became known as the 'Traditionalists' faction.   High Laird Iarrona failed to calm the anger of the Isle's patron at being betrayed, causing the entity to seemingly abandon Faran Iqueia and the people it had protected for millennia.

Outcome

After official victory was declared, traditionalist rebellions continued. As such, new laird were instated on each island, with loyalty to the Monarchy.

Aftermath

The monarchy's reign has brought order, but also tyranny to the islands. Trade and technology have expanded, allowing Faran Iqueia to make contact with the Kingdom of Isarus. However, magic is strictly controlled and kept under the purview of the monarch's forces. Prisoners are used for dangerous labor, in a form of legal slavery.

Historical Significance

Technological Advancement

Since the recent discovery of the Isles by other countries, those fighting on both sides had access to more advanced weapons like cannons. As the Monarchy was anti-isolationist, they favored methods from different countries where the Traditionalists tried to avoid them. The refusal of Traditionalists to outfit their vessels with cannons is considered one of the major factors in the Monarchy's success.
